Andreas has funneled -- through his family and company more than $ 250,000 to campaigns and foundations benefitting Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole. A look at the financial relationship during the last 14 years between the head of the Decatur-based agribusiness giant and the GOP presidential front-runner was the subject of a lengthy story published Sunday in the Boston Globe. It said that ADM in the last three years has provided a below-cost jet for at least 24 trips by Dole (he reimbursed the cost of first-class airfare) ; that "Andreas sold the Dole family a Florida condominium, and Andreas' foundation has given $ 1 million to the American Red Cross, where Dole's wife, Elizabeth, is president. "While there is no evidence that Dole's actions violated any laws," the Globe said, "his moves provide an insight into how Dole operates in Washington and illuminates his ties to special interests." The article focused on Dole's role in helping to save a tax break for the ethanol industry, valued at $ 684 million last year. On Monday, Ellen Miller, director of the Center for Responsive Politics, said there was a "long and historic relationship between ADM and Dole that includes extraordinary support for his enterprises." In the fight to retain the tax break for ethanol, the Globe said Dole "finds himself at odds with some reformers in his own party and an array of independent organizations who criticize preferences like the ethanol subsidy as 'corporate welfare. " ADM is the subject of a Justice Department antitrust probe. Justice is investigating whether ADM conspired to fix prices in high-fructose corn syrup,
