THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
March 7, 2000
The Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr.
Mayor, City of San Francisco
Office of the Mayor
Room 200
1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place
San Francisco, CA 94102
Re: Homeless Assistance
Dear Mayor Brown:
In response to the request that you made in the meeting with John Podesta on January 25, we
have been searching the federal agencies for other available funds to assist the City's homeless
providers. The enclosed list identifies some promising competitive grant programs offered by
the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Health and Human Services. Zina Pierre of our White
House staff, or the Intergovernmental Affairs directors at the relevant agencies, would be pleased
to assist your staff in gathering further information on these programs.
I recognize that the City has been unable to meet all of its budgeted program renewals with the
$9.1 million in Continuum of Care grants that you received this year from HUD. I encourage
you to apply for some of the competitive grants in an effort to make up the shortfall.
I have also enclosed a roster of our agency Intergovernmental Affairs directors. Your staff
should feel free to contact them directly or to let me know if our office can be of any further
assistance. I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Sincerely,
Wills Mickey Ibarra
Assistant to the President and
Director of Intergovernmental Affairs
