of national service resulted in one of the most gratifying
legislative actions I have known -- the passage of H.R. 2010.
This was a victory not for person or party, but for our country.
Under your leadership, the House proved that government can
work -- in a spirit of community and for the common good.
Cooperation
You and the overwhelming majority of your colleagues
showed the spirit of service that we need in Washington and
around the country. With your guidance, members of both parties
recognized that national service isn't Democratic or Republican.
It's just plain American -- helping young people who help
all
America. The bill embodies principles that Americans from
every political viewpoint share: community, responsibility,
and opportunity.
