PRESIDENTIAL DELEGATION ATTENDS OLIVER TAMBO FUNERAL
Washington, DC President Clinton sent a 13-member delegation to South Africa to
represent him at the funeral of Oliver R. Tambo, former president of the African National
Congress (ANC). The delegation attended the May 2 funeral services held at FNB Stadium
in Johannsburg, South Africa. As head of the delegation, Secretary of Housing and Human
Services Donna E. Shalala, who knew Mr. Tambo, delivered a message on behalf of
President Clinton to the crowd of mourners including Nelson Mandela, Mr. Tambo's wife,
Adelaide, his family and friends from throughout the world. Other members of the
delegation who spoke during the services included Maya Angelou who recited a poem and
Reverend Jesse Jackson.

TO THE FUNERAL OF FORMER
PRESIDENT OF THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS

President Mandela, members of the Tambo family, members of the ANC Executive
Committee, Reverend clergy, distinguished guests, people of South Africa
On behalf of President William Jefferson Clinton and the people of the United States
of America, I bring you the deepest expression of condolence on the passing of Oliver
Tambo.
President Clinton wanted this distinguished delegation to be here today to honor the
memory and the life of this extraordinary leader. Our hearts go out to Mrs. Adelaide Tambo
and their children.
Oliver Tambo dedicated his whole life to the cause of liberation for South Africa. He
suffered through years of repression and exile. He led the struggle through some of its most
difficult years. Yet he never lost his faith in South Africa. He never lost his love for his
people. His love and faith in the ANC.
We honor this son of South Africa today for reminding us that the struggle against
apartheid is to free both the oppressed and the oppressor.
We honor him for his vision of a new South Africa, in which all persons, of all races,
would become one people, one South Africa.
We honor him for his leadership in the struggle for freedom around the world.
We come today to celebrate Oliver Tambo's life. Because of his leadership and other
leaders of the liberation movement, the dream of all thoughtful South Africans is at hand.
This is the time.
This is the hour for all those engaged in the negotiating process to free South Africa
once and for all from the bondage of apartheid.

This is the time to begin to reconstruct South Africa, to build a decent life for all its
people, to provide jobs and education, health care and decent housing.
This is the time to rekindle hope for all of South Africa's children.
That will be Oliver Tambo's legacy---a free South Africa--free from oppression, full
of opportunity.
On behalf of President Clinton, we want to assure you that the American people are
with you---not just in this moment of sorrow, but in the days ahead when South Africa sets
the date for its first ever truly democratic election.
We will be with you through that election and in the sometimes difficult years of
reconstruction and growth that will follow.
Brother O.R. Tambo was an inspiration to all of us. We shall not forget him nor
shall we forget our firm commitment to continue to work for a free South Africa.
Yes, Brother Mandela, Oliver Tambo lives in the faces of these children in their
hopes and their dreams.
We must not fail them.
We will not fail them.

It was an honor to receive President Clinton's request through
you that I join the delegation to the funeral of Oliver Tambo.
Mr. Tambo's death was a great loss to those who cherish freedom
throughout the world.
Unfortunately, I cannot accept. When the NAACP staff received
your fax in Baltimore this afternoon, I was in transit from Kansas
city to Detroit via Indianapolis. Additionally, your nemo reached
me too late on Friday afternoon to cancel certain events between
now and Tuesday where NAACP members and other people planned
activities around my presence and participation.
We regret your unsuccessful effort to reach me last night
while I was attending one of our Freedom Fund Dinners in Los
Angeles. Because my office hours will shift to Baltimore beginning
Monday, May 3rd, and because we will secure permanent housing in
Baltimore soon, any future attempt to contact me should be easier.
For now, please record my office number as (410) 358-8900 and
my Cleveland home number as (216) 991-4672. In the near future,
we hope to share a new home number office with your office.
