SUBJECT: Gloves
I spoke with Tom Farrell of the Uniformed Division this morning
about the reported incident. They conducted a preliminary
investigation of the incident and will provide Panetta with
further detail, including any disciplinary action, later today. I
believe that Bob Rubin and Panetta have discussed the matter and
would like to have a formal letter of apology sent to the group
from the USSS. I discussed that with Tom Farrell as well.
Evelyn Lieberman and I spoke early this afternoon about the
various media inquiries and she and McCurry were going to talk to
Farrell about the proper press response. You may want to feed
whatever inquiries you have to her for a coordinated response.
Or, as the liaison to the community, perhaps you should be the
spokesperson. My response to press inquiries is always a
knee-jerk one -- give it to a press person.
I'll make sure that you are kept informed of any further
developments.
