THE REVEREND PROFESSOR PETER J. GOMES
Born in 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Plymouth, the Reverend
Professor Peter John Gomes is an American Baptist minister ordained to the
Christian Ministry by the First Baptist Church of Plymouth. Widely regarded as
one of America's most distinguished preachers, he has served since 1970 in The
Memorial Church, and since 1974 has been Plummer Professor of Christian
Morals in Harvard University and Minister in The Memorial Church. He
graduated in 1965 from Bates College with the A.B. degree, and in 1968 from the
Harvard Divinity School with the degree of S.T.B. Professor Gomes holds
honorary degrees from New England College, Waynesburg College, Gordon
College, Knox College, Bates College, and The University of the South. He is an
Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College, The University of Cambridge, England.
Professor Gomes is a member of the Faculty of Divinity and of the Faculty of Arts
and Sciences at Harvard. His teaching and research interests include the history
of the ancient Christian church, Elizabethan Puritanism, homiletics, worship,
church music, and the history of the black American experience. Hc has fulfilled
preaching appointments and addresses throughout North America and the British
Isles, and has participated in the inaugurations of President Reagan and President
Bush.
His current book entitled The Good Book: Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart,
published by William Morrow & Co., is a national bestseller. Professor Gomes
serves as an Advisory Editor of Pulpit Digest, and on the Advisory Board of The
Living Pulpit. IIe has published numerous articles and papcrs, and has presented
lectures and colloquia widely throughout the United States and England.
Professor Gomes is a Trustee of Wellesley College, and of the Roxbury Latin
School. He is immediate past President of the Pilgrim Society of Plymouth. A
sometime Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, he has also served as
Trustee of Bates College, of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), of the New
England Conservatory, and of the Handel and Haydn Society. Professor Gomes's
former affliations include service as Acting Director of the W.E.B. Du Bois
Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University, President of the
Signet Associates, and Trustee of the Ella Lyman Cabot Trust.
