This is because we have, thus far, dominated the debate on the following issues: Serious, credible deficit reduction. The President is widely credited for outlining the debilitating affect the deficit has on real people - on jobs and incomes, focusing national attention on the urgent need to bring it down, and proposing a serious plan to do SO. Spending cuts. We have been very successful in demonstrating the President's commitment to cutting government waste and eliminating outdated programs. And we have been equally successful in demanding that those who suggest the plan doesn't cut enough propose specific cuts of their own. Truth in budgeting. The public understands that the President has presented the first economic plan in a very long time that doesn't use rosy scenarios and magic asterisks to reach pie-in-the-sky conclusions. This is an honest plan. Fairness. The President's plan asks everyone to contribute, but asks the most from those who have the most. The public fundamentally recognizes the depth of our economic problem and is willing to participate in the solution. Much of that willingness, however, is predicated on the companion understanding that the President is demanding that government, corporations, and the wealthy do their fair share. Now, we need to refocus attention on the need for investment in the American people - right now and for the long-term. The core message at this point in the discussion is: This is a slow-growth, jobless recovery; we need investment now to make this recovery stronger and more durable. Talking points on the plan as a whole are attached, including answers to some common questions. As best you can, please focus the discussion on the investment portion of the plan. If we can be of further help, don't hesitate to call.
