Source Description

A plan of the Town of Reading in the County of Middlesex and the Town of Lynnfield in the County of Essex taken upon a scale two hundred pole to the inch there are three Meeting Houses for Publick worship in said Reading. The Roads are dotted with green. There are Bridges over the Rivers where the Roads leap the River. The Road marked S is the Road from Salem to Tyngsborough. The Road marked B is the Road from Reading to Boston. The reputed Distance from the South meeting to the Town House in Boston is 12 mile. Cambridge the nearest Shire Town of the County is 12 miles. The line between Reading and the towns of Andover, Middleton, Lynnfield & Lynn is the line betweem the Counties of Essex & Middlesex. There is [sic] four Grist mills and five Sawmills. The whole of the plan of Reading contains 17,325 acres, deduct 878 [for water and road area] remains 16,447. There is [sic] five ponds, whose reputed magnitude contains 618 acres, Rivers 14, the roads contain 246 [total] 878. There is one Meeting house for publick worship in the District of Lynnfield. The roads are marked with green. The Road marked S is the great Road from Salem to Tyngsborough. The reputed Distance from the Meeting house [in] the center of the District to the Town House in Boston is 15 miles and from Salem the nearest Shire Town in the County is 10 miles where the District of Lynnfield joins on Reading is the line between the County of Essex and the County of Middlesex. There is one grist Mill and one Fulling Mill. The plan of Lynnfield contains 5,800 acres, deduct 190 [for water and road area], remains 5,610. There are two ponds reputed magnitude contains 115, the roads contain 75, total 190. The plan was taken October & November 1794 by me Daniel Needham, Surveyor." -- Handwritten text from map.
