Letter from Austin Willey, Hallowell, [Maine], to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1846 Apr[il] 22
Austin Willey writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding the columns in the "Mirror" written by William Warren of Windham in reply to the Syracuse Address. He discusses Mr. Cummings who they have "'over the coals' on another matter respecting the sinfulness of slavery per se. He discusses slavery and slave law and writes, "If he will go ahead with his theory and tear away all the abuses of slavery--tear it down, and demand for the slaves all those rights and privileges which he claims for himself on the authority of the bible, for that is impartial, I would by no means oppose him." He orders 500 copies of the "Slave's Friend" unbound, and 2 or 3 dozen of the bound copies.
