Source Description

Dressed in satin with a pearl choker in the fashion popular during the late 1600s, this young, aristocratic lady sits before a wild landscape that suggests the park of a vast estate. Below her elbow on a rock is a butterfly identified as a Red Admiral; its prominence suggests that it has some special meaning for her. Haagen was influenced by Netscher and worked principally for members of the aristocratic Pfalz-Neuburg family at different residences in central Europe.
