Source Description

Possibly an illustration from the Jataka story of Prince Vessantara. King Sanjaya, the father of Prince Vessantara is seen leading his army to find and return Prince Vessantara to his kingdom. The king is mounted on the revered white elephant that was returned by the eight Brahmins who had received it from Prince Vessantara. It was the gift of the white elephant to the Brahmins that led to Vessantara's exile.
