Sketches of Head of Lioness
The inscription identifies the subject as the lioness that died in October 1828. Barye shows her from one side and from above, carefully recording the muscular structure of the head. Henri Gauthier, comte de Rigny, donated a lion and lioness to the Jardin des Plantes in 1828.
