Source Description
This full-length portrait, dated 1776, presents the subject as a Knight of the Saint Espirit (Order of the Holy Ghost) of France. His costume is of white satin trimmed in lace, embroidered blue velvet mantle with the collar and pendant badge. He stands in a richly decorated room, with an Aubusson carpet bordered with the motto "Alter Post Fulmina Terror" ("After the thunderbolt another terror"), and with the coat-of-arms of the family of Orleans. The arists, Dugourc, was a designer, painter, and engraver. He was born at Versailles, developed early artistic gifts and was also employed as a designer of theatrical properties and costume.
