A carved ivory netsuke in the form of a seated and laughing Chinese sage with his hands to his right ear.An almost square dark brown lacquer three compartment inro of two Chinese sages. On one side of the inro is a standing Chinese sage holding a gourd (hyotan or hisagao) in a balustrade with trees. On the other side a seated Chinese sage holding a staff in a balustrade with trees. The figures are carved in applied tortoise shell, the setting in brownish-black takamakie and gold lacquer. Some touches of red lacquer. A nunome background. the top and bottom with a floral scroll design in gold. The interior with nashiji. The cord channels are external and made of a lobed metal design
