Source Description
The carved ivory cylinder for a low tankard is one of a group attributed to a follower of the Nuremberg sculptor Leonhard Kern, all showing putti and putti bacchanals. This example depicts putti drinking and dancing; a pair playing piggyback; and the unusual subject of a putto chopping down a tree. The piggyback putti are closely paralleled by a bronze from the workshop of Leonhard Kern, of which there is a bronze cast in the Walters Collection (Walters 54.291).The mounts are missing, and the upper edge is reinforced with a modern gilt mount.
