Source Description
During the American Civil War George G. Meade served as a Union general, he is best known for defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. This miniature is a framed section of a steel engraving with hand coloring added to the uniform. The print is probably the widely circulated portrait by Alonzo Chappel (see "National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans," by Evert Augustus Duyckinck, vol. 1, 1861, opp. p. 520).
