Kozuka with Carp on Bamboo

17th-19th centuries (Edo) 3 3/4 in. (9.6 cm) (l.) Citation Source image

In the middle of the composition is a carp with a bamboo stalk through its mouth. Carp are considered felicitous because their Japanese name ("tai") is a syllable that is part of the word for "auspicious" ("medetai").
