Document source description
This carved panel is divided into several scenes along two registers. On the upper register one recognizes the flagellation of Christ on the left, and to the right a scene of Christ carrying his cross with the aid of the Virgin. On the lower register we see from left to right the holy family's flight into Egypt, the falling of the idols and the presentation of Christ in the temple. This plaque demonstrates well medieval practices of reading imagery such as this - the medieval viewer would have read the images from left to right and bottom to top. Along this organization, the viewer would follow Christ from just after his birth to his ultimate Passion.
