Source Description
Rock crystal, a transparent quartz mineral that was highly prized, can be carved in various ways, including with facets, as here, to catch the flickering light of a candle. Before the invention of electricity, candlelight in a darkened chapel would have created an easily understood metaphor for divine illumination.
