Gertrude 8. Banfield
Home Nurning instructor for
Hawaii Chapter
We have been asked to supply a Public Health nurse who can
serve as an instructor in Home Hursing in the Hawaii Chapter. She should
be an individual possessing outstanding personal qualifications as for as
initiative, originality, outgoing personality, and executive ability are
concerned. It is also important that she have had Public Hoalth preparation
e
and experience as well as experience in teaching. The responsibility of this
individual will be to assist in the development and expansion of the Home
Nursing program in Hawaii and to therofore, train instructors to teach Home
Nursing as well as to do some teaching of the course itaelf. Thore is a
director of Home Nursing in the Chapter at present ao this individual
would not assumo the responsibility of the director. It is to be alearly
understcod that she is not hired as such.
The Balary will be approximately $300 per month and it is
assumed that transportation to and from Hawaii will be provided. It is
expected that the period of aervice will tuke about two years as it is hoped
that by that time the program will be woll along in all the islands with
sufficient trained instructors to carry one
I am wondering if you would contact two of the nurses whom you
contacted regarding the possibility of assignments for supervisors of staff
welfare overseas to see whether or not they might be interested and available
for such employment.
One of the nurses is Miss Grace Mario Lawronce, badge number 37,543,
of 219 Commonw alth Avenue, Cheatnut Hill, 67, Hassachusette. Sho is now
Supervisor of Public Hoalth Bursing in the Nowton Hoalth Department. I
realize that because of the position of responsibility which she holds it
might not be possible for her to be roleased promptly, but she must understand
that we are anxious to securo soncone for this position at the earliest
possible moment.
It will be nocessury for the individual who goes out to take the
teacherta troining ecurse in six lessons in Home Nursing which will be a
matter of about two weeks proparation at least in this before she
can go. Additional proparation may be necessary depending country upon the
back-
ground of the individual. It occurred to me that Miss Lawrence night be
especially interested in the Hawaii position inasmach as she lived in
Honolulu for a time. Furthermore, I imagine that ahe would be woll qualified
for the position although I have not reviewed hor references which are doubt-
less in your files.
Another nurse whom we considered for ovorseas service is MrS.
