Mise J. Beatrice Bowman,
Supt. of Nurses,
Wavy Nurse Corps,
Navy Department,
Bashington, D. C,
B
My dear Miss Bowman:
For several years we have been publishing
in the Annual Report of the American Red Crose in connection with
our classification showing the distribution of Red Crose nurses
a
statement showing the strength of the Nursing Service of your
Department. We have followed this with & footnote to the following
effect -
(It ie estimated that the majority of nurses in the
Government Services are enrolled Red Croes nurses;
therefore, by the permission of each Service, the
total number of nurses is submitted.)
The reasone for incorporating this informa-
tion in our Report at all is due to the fact that as the Red Cross
bursing Service ie the reserve of the Army and Wavy, and as à very
large proportion of the nurses of these corpa are enrolled and are
classified at National Headquarters to this effect that we should
make some attempt to show the number of Red Crose nurses that were
serving in these two departments.
th the establishment of the Nurse Gorps of
the Public Health Service a communication was sent from the Nursing
Service to the Surgeon General offering a continuance of the
cooperative arrangements which had been eetablished prior to the
establishment of the nurse corpe and which was cordially accepted.
The seme course was followed in connection with the Veterans Bureau
Nurse vorps. Hence these two nursing services have also been
included in the resume. As we have had no definite information as
to the esact number of nurses who might be enrolled and who were
merving in the government nurse corpe we have raised the question
in our own mind as to the propriety of using the word #majority"
in the above footnote.
