    "ocrText": "to\n?\n+\nto\n5\nApril 22,1942\nH\na\na\nPresident, Alunnae Association\nMary Lanning Memorial Hospital\nSchool of Nursing\nHastings, Nebraska\n3\nDear President:\nan\nThe Alumnae Association of the Mary Lanning Memorial\n&\nHospital School of Hursing will, I think, be particulary interested\na\nin the subject of this letter. As of course you all know, Miss Ida\nM. Britton, from your School, volunteered to serve with the American\nc\nRed Cross-Harvard Unit Field Hospital for communicable diseases in\nEngland. You have probably followed the interesting experiences the\nnurses in that group are having in Salisbury now. Perhaps you do\nnot know how valuable their work is. The British Ministry of Health\nhas been most complimentary in regard to it. As an example of its\nvalue, if a single case of typhus fever should appear in England, it\nis this Unit which would be sent by the Ministry of Health to take\nmeasures which there is every reason to believe would control the\nterrible menace to the people of England.\nWe are all very proud of the work of this group of Red\nCross nurses. Wie hear of it from many different groups of people and\nalways with great respect and admiration for the nurses. It has been\ndecided both by Harvard University and by the Red Cross that the work\nof the Unit should continue and it is hopod many of the present group\nwill decide to remain with it. There could be no more important war\nwork anywhere than this.\nYou will remember the tragedy of the torpedoing and ship-\nwreck of the S.S. Maasden and S.S. Vigrid last June, and you will\nremember too, I think, that five of these nurses and their house-\nmother, Mrs. Ruth Breckinridge, lost their lives then, their liftboat\nwent to pieces after the Mansden was torpedoed.\nFriends of Mrs. Breckinridge have wanted to give a memorial\nto her and have felt that the kind of memorial she would have liked\nbest would be a sum of money to be placed with the American Red Cross\nwhich would constitute e loanofund for the returned nurses of the Red.\nCross-Harvard Unit. No one is being asked to give any money to this\nmemorial, but friends of the Unit are being told about it so that if\nthey wish to have a part in building up this fund, the opportunity\nwill be given to then to do so."
