Copy of letter from Miss D'Olier to Miss Noyes, May 30, 1923.
" Your letter of May 12 is at hand. I thank you most sincerely for your kindness
in securing for me a two months leave. I asked Colonel Ross about reservation on
a transport and he informed me that the only way a Red Cross Nurse could obtain
transportation was as a civilian pauper. I really did not have the courage to ask
the Governor on top of this. The first sailing available on the Porto Rico
Line is August 1, but a friend is trying to get me a passage on the Baltimore Line
a freight line that carries a few passengers and is said to be very confortable."
Miss Noyes Reply, June 7, 1923.
" Your three letters of May 30th have just been recieved. I cannot begin to tell
you how surprised I am at Colonel Ross' reply. Of course a good deal depends upon how
he said it, but it sounds rather crude. I have called up the Army and find that
apparently be is partially wrong on this point. He might grant transportation
to a pauper who was being deported, but I hope you will not let it rest at that
but go direct to the Governor. However, use your own judgment in this respect. It
ia a matter that cannot be authorized from Washington, but which I believe he Col. Ros
has the privilege of arranging if he so desired, and no questions would be raised.
Inasmuch as Governor Towner is now the Honorary Chairman of the Chapter, perhaps
he would take some special interest in the matter. I have written to Miss Frost
about Miss Diaz, and also note what you say about the School of Nursing."
