I e M Extracted from letter from Mrs. Heilman to Miss Noyes, April 3, 1922. " June lst. in order to have the month of June for vacations, travel time and release of Returning to the subject of our appropriation: our instructions now are to close our work personnel by July lst. as I figure my budget, I shall still have $1252.53 remaining unexpend this wouls give me$208.42 a month until January lst. Our Committee is trying its very 5 ed. best to find $100. per month to pay toward my salary so that they may request the Red Cross a to permit me to remain on until the first of the year, when our new doctors would be better trained in their work, the paid Volunteers well started, and I should have a new course of lectures and classes for another such group well under way so that the committee could easily go on with it. " Ans. by Miss Noyes, April 26, 1922. " I understand that Mr. Hill is enroute to Athens, and perhaps by this time has reached there, I know how.s.mpalhhetic he is with the work that you are doing, and I am hoping that he will be able to allow the balance of $1252. to be expended toward the continuance of your work, with you in charge. until the first of January." M letter filed 630. Greece Extracted from letter from Miss Hay to Miss Noyes May 4, 1922. " MRS HEILMAN'S SALARY:- " Under former arrangement Mrs. Heilman was given a salary of $125. plus maintenance. As you may recall, maintenance rates in Athens have usually been much higher than in other fields. When you and I were there the nurses were being paid $140. or more. This mainten- ance allowance was later reduced to $100. and again on substantial evidence a second reduc- tion was made made more recently cutting the maintenance from $100 to $75. In recognition o of the justice of Red Cross there her position necessitated considerable extra expenses for her, rather than give her maintenance allowance larger than Miss Judy's an increase of $15 was made in her salary of $140. plus $75. maintenance as over against a salary of $125. plus $100 maintenance."
