April 21, 1943 Miss Florence Elizabeth Little 261 County Road Barrington, Rhode Island My dear Miss Little: In response to your recent letter, may we advise that as you have passed your forty-fifth birthday, you are overage for military service. The Army Nurse Corps regulations are that a nurse is considered eligible uo to her forty-fifth birthday, and in certifying nurses to the Army, we must, of course be guided by their regulations. Due to your excellent preparation and experience in the Public Health field, we will keep your name on file for consideration for service in postwar rehabilitation work as we anticipate that the American Red Cross Nursing Service may be called upon to supply personnel when such a program is organized. I am very sorry that you are not eligible for military service, but we are bound to be governed by Army and Nurse Corps regulations. It is your privilege, of course, to plead your own cause, and if you wish to contact the Army Nurse Corps about this regulation and whethe: r or not there is any possibility of waiving it in your particular case, may I advise that you write directly to the Lieutenant Colonel of your service command, whose name and address is - Lt. Colonel Ruth I. Taylor Asst. Supt. of Nurses, U.S.A. First Service Command Army Base, Boston 9, Massachusetts It might even be better for you to go to Boston for a personal inter- view if it were possible for you to arrange it. We would be very gratified, of course, if Lt. Colonel Taylor were able to make an exception in your case and would consider you for a military appointment. With our continued best wishes to you, I am Very truly yours, (Mrs.) Ernestine B. Amick Assistant to Director EBA:SJ Nursing Service
