file April 30, 1942 CLIPPER MAIL Letter #] Miss Gertrude Madley Chief Nurse American Red Cross-Harvard Hospital Unit Salisbury, Wilts., England My dear Miss Madley: Your letters of April 8 to me and Miss Beard came in yesterday and I am sitting down to acknowledge them to assure you that we are immediately at work on filling your needs. I have listed everything in your letter and hope I can check every item off with an answer. We are very glad to have the suggestions to give the nurses to be appointed about clothing and articles to bring. Do you remember the magazine called "The Family Circle" which is always in the grocery stores with a sign above it "Take One"? You will be excited, I am sure, to know that your picture below appeared next to General MacArthur no less in an article on the Red Cross. I have clipped on the part of the article which referred to the Unit. I never expected to read about you in the grocery store! And so you all have gardens! I have never been able to make any- thing grow and I am surely glad no one is dependent on my efforts. We have been very sympathetic readers of your diets and we are filled with admiration for your ingenious ways of getting around difficulties. We are very interested to hear that the hospital is busy at the time you are writing. I shall look right away into the question of the salary for the Assistant Dietitien and if I find out anything today I will enclose it with this letter. I am also checking on Miss Geekie and the procedure for transferring to the Army Nurse Corps and if we have any information on that today I hope to enclose it. I haven't talked with Miss Beard about seeing or writing to Mrs. Stahlnecker, but whatever we might do by letter I should think we might see her at the nursing meetings to be held in Chicago the 18-25 of May when Miss Beard and I both expect to be there part of the time. We are having our first hot days and the trees are si ply beautiful. You will be receiving this just about a year from the day you left here, May 19. We all send our love to you and Elisabeth and Alice Olson and Walborg Peterson and would like to mention all of the others of your family of 62 as well. Wait til they see the Spring in England and if it doesn't get under their skin, I shall be very much surprised for it is certainly the living picture of Hudson's "Green Mansions." I shall get off a letter in a day or two to give specific suggestions on your questions. Sincerely yours, D/h
