One nurse will be selected by Miss White who will act as
Head Nurse of the Unit until they arrive at their destination, and report
to the representative of that place.
Full equipment will be provided. Nurses to thomaquipment
cards have been issued must have these filled out and returned to the
Bureau of Endipment at 222 Fourth Ave,, New York City, as soon as possible,
by special delivery, being careful to give the correct instructions as to
size of hat, waists, gloves, etc.
The equipment of nurses not living in the Atlantic, New
England, or Pennsylvania Divisions will be shipped directly to San Francisco
or to Seattle.
Nurses living in the Divisions mentioned will have their
equipment shipped directly to their homes and any alterations necessary may
be made before they proceed to the point of embarkation
Nurses living in New York or in the immediate vicinity are
requested to report in person to the Bureau of Equipment for instructions
regarding equipment. This must be done as soon after this letter of instruc-
tion has been received as possible.
May I urge that all nurses notify this office when their com-
plete equipment has been received. < Nurses who have been informed that their
equipment will be sent to their homes must not proGeed to San Francisco or to
Seattle unless this equipment has been received. If equipment has not been
received it is important that they communicate with this Déficement at Head-
quarters at once by wire.
Instructions regarding your applying for passport will be
issued by your Division Director. We have suggested that they ask all nurse
to.notify us of the date on which they make application for passport and we
also suggest that they notify us of the date on which they return their equip-
ment cards to New York, either by letter or by post card.
Due to the limited space on the steamers it is difficult to
give and approximate date of your sailing. In view of this uncertainty we
would suggest that you do not give up the work that you are now doing until
you, have received definite instructions to proceed. This may give you very
little time for final arrangements but may save you considerable time in waiting.
You should take as little of your own apparel with you as possible
as this will be shipped back to your home assison as you receive the Red Cross
equipment. No furs such as scarfs, muffs or fur coats will be allowed but a
knitted scarf of khaki or navy blue may be taken.
Nurses assigned to service overseas should understand that we
cannot promise a definite assignment to any nurse. They are selected for
service with reference to their preparation for special types of work, and are
assigned by the representative of the Nursing Service overseas accordingly,
although changing conditions may take this temporaryly impossible. They are
expected, therefore, to accept such assignment as may be given, under such
circunstances.
Nurses serving under the Red Cross in foreign countries are
under serious ethical obligations not only to the nursing profession by
