July 25, 1919.
Mrs. Raymond Demarest,
Tenafly, N. J.
My dear Mrs. Demarest:
On May 1, 1919, a letter was written to you informing you that Miss
Alice V. Murphy had died in military service overseas.
This report has been
contradicted we are glad to say, and so far as we know, Miss Murphy is still alive
and in all probability will very soon be returning to this country.
In explanation, may I say. that we thad two nurses by the name of Alice V.
Murphy enrolled in the Red Cross Nursing Service, who were assigned to European
service about the same time, and when the report of the death of "Alice V. Murphy"
was received, these two nurses were confused.
However, our Bureau of Personnel has just confirmed our statement that
your friend is still alive, as they have received information concerning her as
late as the 24th instant.
We deeply regret that this error was made, but are so glad that Miss
Murphy is alive as far as we know, and I am sure you will be delighted to have
this information.
Very sincerely yours,
AGD:MD
Acting Director, Department of Nursing.
