RE:
Alico V. Murphy - #17931.
Your telegram of July 24th was received this morning,
and we were indeed distressed to discover the error in the re-
port of the death of Miss Alice V. Murphy, No. 17931.
You
have doubtless received my wire in regard to the matter, a con-
firmation copy of which is attached.
Under date of December 19, 1918, the War Department
advised us of the death of Miss Alice V. Murphy on October 7th.
Unfortunately we had two nurses by the name of Alice
V. Murphy enrolled (one with the San Francisco, Calif. Local
Committee and the other with the Ann Arbor, Michigan Committee)
who were both serving in Europe, and at the time of receiving the
above mentioned notification of death, we had no way of determin-
ing whether the nurses mentioned were both at the same Base Hospital.
We have just discovered however, that it was the Miss
Alice V. Murphy of Michigan who died, and Miss Alice V. Murphy
No. 17931 is still alive, as far as we know, and in all proba-
bility will be returning to this country very soon. Our
Bureau
of Personnel has just confirmed this statement, having received
information in regard to the nurse as late as the 24th instant.
I assure you that we deeply regret this error and I am
writing to the nearest relative of the nurse, as given in her
papers - Mr. Edward F. Murphy, Pomeroy, Garfield Co., Washington,
concerning the matter today.
I am also enclosing' the number 2 card of Miss Alice V.
Murphy #17931 to be refiled with the San Francisco, Calif. Local
Committee.
We shall be glad to have you advise us when this has
been done, and all records concerning the death of this nurse, which
may have been made in your office, have been destroyed.
