Full equipment will be provided. Nurses to
whom equipment cards are issued must have these filled out and returned
to the Bureau of Equipment at 222 Fourth Ave., New York City as soon
after their receipt as possible, by special delivery, being careful to
give the correct instructions regarding size of hat, waists, gloves, etc.
The equipment of nurses not living in the
Atlantic, New England or Penneylvania Divisions will be shipped direct-
ly to San Francisco or to Seattle.
Nurses living in the Divisions mentioned
will have their equipment shipped directly to their homes, and any alter-
ations necessary may be made before they proceed to the point of embark-
ation.
Nurses living in New York or in the immed-
iate vicinity are requested to report in person to the Bureau of Equip-
ment for instructions regarding equipment. This must be done as soon
after this letter of instruction is received as possible.
May I urge that all nurses notify this office
when their CO plete equipment has arrived. Nurses who have been informed
that equipment will be issued to their homes will not proceed to San
Francisco or to Seattle unless their equipment has arrived. If equipment
has not arrived it is important that they communicate with (this Department
at Headquarters at once by wire.
Instructions regarding your applying for
pass) ort will be issued by your Division Director. We have suggested
that they ask all nurses to notify us of the date on which they make
application for passport, and we also suggest that you notify us of the
date on which you returned your equipment card to New York, either by letter
or post card.
Due to the limited space on the steamers it
is difficult to give an approximate date of your sailing. In view of
this uncertainty we would urge that you do not give up the work that
you are doing, until your instructions to proceed have been received.
This may give you very little time to make final arrangements, but may
save you consi erable time in waiting.
You should take as little of your own apparel
as possible, as this will be shipped back to your home as soon after you
have received your Red Cross e joipment. No furs, such as scarfs, muffs,
or fur costs will be allowed, but a knitted scarf either navy blue or
khaki may be taken.
Nurses assigned to service under the Red Cross
overseas should understand that we cahnot promise By definite assignment
to any nurse. They are selected for service with reference to their
