EXTRACT FROM LETTER TO MISS, ANNA STANLEY, SOUTHVESTEFN DIV. FROM MISS FOX
March 24th, 1920 11891
For
"Miss Noyes has also dug up another nurse who might be a good one for you to
have. She is Miss Eva Louise Smyth, Badge No. 11891; born on the Isle of
St. Hemena; preliminary education, 21/2 years high school, 6 months business
college, graduate of the Malden Training School in '98: did private duty
nursing for a year and served as a doctor's office nurse and assistant in surgical
cases for 16 years. She then took up school nursing in Pasadena for a short time.
and later entered the Town and Country Nursing Service in Pennsylvania for 9
months from which she resigned to enter war service. She was with the Harvard
Unit doing special work for Dr. Cabot. Later she was a member of the ARC Mission
to Vladivostak: All her recommendations are excellent. Mrs. Parsons, however,
says that she is"not always refined" and that "she is resentful of interference
with her methods." Mrs. Parsons adds, "she has a great deal of executive ability
many good qualities and does valuable work." Her training school superintendent
says "work unusually good; conduct, very good; - executive ability - marked:
work since graduation, excellent. Dr. Prior says: "faithful, efficient, very
capable, had large experience along lines which do not come into ordinary train-
ing." Dr. Nicoll, head of the Harvard Unit, says: "A woman of a good deal of
personality, exceedingly competent; good judgment." Our own record of her
simply states: "Always heard her spoken of very highly as a nurse."
"Miss Holmes knew of her work in France and says she did excellent work and or-
ganized a large dispensary and carried on public health nursing work. Those for
whom she worked could not say enough in praise of her personality and work. Miss
Holmes met her several times', and says that she is a large, heavy woman, honest,
direct, capable; an executive; not shirking responsibility; blunt but not un-
refined; has force and her work commands respect. "
"Although she has not had any supervised public health nursing experience, nor
any special training in baby work, Miss Holmes seems to think that her experi-
ence and ability are both so unusual as to make her a valuable supervisor for
your work in Missouri. She seems to think that she would fit particularly in the
Middle West."
She has written Miss Noyes that she wants to return to Europe
but Miss Noyes is anxious to have her remain in this country. She is enrolled
in the New England Division but Miss Holmes thinks as I have said, she would fit
better in the Middle West. I presume Miss Ross would not mind your approaching
her. Her address is 50 Carroll Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts, care of Mrs.
H. Tillson. "
