THE AMERICAN RED CROSS PACIFIC BRANCH CDNOI FEB 3 1942 a TO DATE Miss Gertrude Banfield January 29, 1942 National Headquarters FROM SUBJECT Miss Badger Our Nursing Consultant, Miss Katherine Forsythe, had a personal interview with Miss Fara Sullivan at El Centro, California, and on this basis we decided to include her in the Hawaiian Unit. The following is the report of Miss Forsythe: "A call was made to Miss Sullivan at the El Centro hospital to discuss the letter which she wrote to Capt. Weider of the Army Nurse Corps. NC found her to be an attractive girl who was feeling very unhappy about her impetuous letter to Miss Weider. She young is Irish and had resented the tone of Miss Weiders letter to her, but she said that she realized that she was very wrong to answer her as she had. The reason that she said what she did about the salary was that she has financial obligations which amount to $65 a month and army salary would leave her only $5.00 for her needs. "She said that she had meant what she said about being willing to go to a camp as soon as war was declared and she had resigned her position at the hospital as soon as that happened. She told NC that she had applied to Miss Banks to be sent to Hawaii and has had her physical examination in San Diego the other day. "NC explained the relation of the RC to the Army nurse corps and that letters of the sort she wrote were embarrassing to us. She seems to be genuinely sorry for the incident and seems to be well liked at the hospital. "In spite of the impertinent tone of her letter, NC feels that Miss Sullivan should be given another chance to serve either the RC or the Army Nurse Corps. She does not seem like the kind of a girl who would be a "trouble Maker" (Miss) Gladyce L. Badger Director, Nursing Service Pacific Area, A.R.C. 1226
