FORM O-S 2
ATLANTIC DIVISION
AMERICAN NATIONAL RED CROSS
INTER-OFFICE LETTER
To
Miss Clara D. Noyes
Date
May 3, 1920
M.
From
Miss Florence M. Johnson
Subject Elsie Jessup
3/822
Miss Elsie Jessup returned April 3 on the
"Panonia", in care of Dr. Flood, who had been also in
Red Cross vverseas.service. Miss Jessup had been ill
before starting, but arrived in very good condition
on
this side. She was planning to be operated on
for stones in the kidney, which was the diagnosis given
by the doctors before she sailed.
As Miss Jessup is a graduate of the New York
Hospital, she decided to have her observations and
treatments there. She went to Dr. Poole, who sent her
to the hospital for X-Rays and cystoscopic examinations.
After several days of observations they decided that
for the present no operation was necessary, as the
trouble was not calculi in the kidney, but ptosis of
the stomach and intestines. A surgical belt from
Pomeroy's has been ordered and Miss Jessup left the
hospital to follow directions regarding rest, exercise,
and diet given by Dr. Poole, in conference with several
other physicians. As she was a graduate of the New York
Hospital, her care cost her nothing.
Miss Jessup's case was referred to the
insurance office as soon as she returned, and her
insurance has already begun to be paid. Her salary
was paid up to April 1, when it was stopped as her
insurance began then and Miss Jessup felt herself
that she would not be entitled to both.
She had been sent home on sick leave, to be
returned as speedily as possible. I think since her
arrival she is quite willing to accept our decision
in the matter, only hoping very much she will be
allowed to go back as she feels she has been so long
in the country and is so well acquainted with its
language and habits that she could do the work better
possibly than some one who has not seen as much service.
