    "ocrText": "2 -\npossible route which was by taking a Japanese steamer from Kobe to M\nI regret to report at the failure of my mission inasmuch as it can-\ncerned a Red Cross unit. Though Dr. Steinmetz and I tried to established\ncommunication with the Japanese Red Cross in Yokohama, where 1 had hoped\nto have the Filipino nurses meet their colleagues of Jayan, we were not\nable to follow this up. That the Filipino nurses were given very\npoor quarters on the transport was perhaps unavoidable but the fact that\nat first particularly no effort was made to ventilate their quarters and\nthe fact that there were not even enough chairs to bring the sick nurses\nup on deck greatly added to the hardships of the trip and it is not sur-\nprising that all, with few exceptions, suffered intensely from sea-sick-\nness.\nI wish to pay tribute here to their attitude towards the whole situs-\ntion. I did not hear one single complaint against conditions as they were\nand when the trip was finally ended, the morale of the group was very\nhigh. It was, however, unfortunate that for days and days they had to be\nkept on board the transport with nothing to do and with no assurance that\nthere would be busy days ahead.\nRespectfully submitted,\nALICE FITZGERAID.\nOctober 13, 1923."
