2 - possible route which was by taking a Japanese steamer from Kobe to M I regret to report at the failure of my mission inasmuch as it can- cerned a Red Cross unit. Though Dr. Steinmetz and I tried to established communication with the Japanese Red Cross in Yokohama, where 1 had hoped to have the Filipino nurses meet their colleagues of Jayan, we were not able to follow this up. That the Filipino nurses were given very poor quarters on the transport was perhaps unavoidable but the fact that at first particularly no effort was made to ventilate their quarters and the fact that there were not even enough chairs to bring the sick nurses up on deck greatly added to the hardships of the trip and it is not sur- prising that all, with few exceptions, suffered intensely from sea-sick- ness. I wish to pay tribute here to their attitude towards the whole situs- tion. I did not hear one single complaint against conditions as they were and when the trip was finally ended, the morale of the group was very high. It was, however, unfortunate that for days and days they had to be kept on board the transport with nothing to do and with no assurance that there would be busy days ahead. Respectfully submitted, ALICE FITZGERAID. October 13, 1923.
