Chinacts X August 8, 1952 Libiary 041 Dear Mrs. Collins, What a pleasant surprise to receive your very nice let- ter of August 1. Although the Convention cost me flat feet and varicose veins, I have never enjoyed anything quite so much in my life, the basis for my enjoyment being that the right candidate won. Maybe I shouldn't say this in view of the fact that our Governor was in the running. There was a very good reason why I didn't run for Con- gress this election year. I was offered the support of the Dem- ocratic organization to obtain the Democratic nomination for Congress from my district and I believe I would have been suc- cessful in the primaries but I turned it down - simply because I wanted to work for General Eisenhower and, secondly, because I didn't want to be a Democrat. I have always been registered as an Independent until just recently when I changed my regis- tration to be able to vote in the primaries. I too regret that I didn't work during the re-election of Governor Warren. I think he is a very fine man and has made an excellent Governor. It must be very exciting to work in a campaign when your candidate wins. I certainly hope to be able to take an active part in pol- itics in the state of California from here on out. If my ser- vices can be used in the forthcoming campaign, I will come out to California in the fall (I am usually there only during the winter months) Again, it was very nice making your acquaintance and I hope we meet again in the not too distant future. Cordially yours, Jacqueline Cochran Mrs. Emily Collins Founder's Insurance Co. 523 W. 6th St. Los Angeles 14, Cal.
