(2) Saturatod canvases
(3) Torn canvases

Packing of panol paintings for transportation should aim at
avoiding extromos of tomporature and humidity, and also any
damago from shock. Soft insulating matorial should bo used with
panols, and whon possiblo a double casing of air tight and wator-
proof material, to maintain an ovon air condition; but air tight
containers cannot bo usod for storago. Romombor that bad roads
and springless motal wagons are likoly to damago dolicato objocts
in transportation, and provisions should be mado for such possi-
bilitios. Undamagod canvases in transport should be kopt vorti-
cal, long side to ground. Framed picturos should be transportod
in thoir framo, with papor pastod ovor any glass to minimize
dangers of broakago.
O. Storago Paintings should not bo kopt in soalod air tight
containers oxcopt for briof poriods of transportation. For stor-
ago they should be loft in thoir fromes, hung on scroons if avail-
ablo, or whon spaco is limitod placed vortically in woodon racks
raisod off the ground, faco to back, with cardboard or pads
botwoon oach. If paintings must bo romoved from framos thoy
should bo storod in the samo way; but canvasos must not bo allowod
to touch oach other and should bo soparatod by shoots of collo-
phano or pads. Mold can bost bo proventod by maintnining a con-
stant normal tomporaturo with rolativo humidity botwoon 40 do-
groos and 60 dogroos and a froo circulation of air. Thymol vapor
is destructivo to the varnish of paintings and must not bo usod
noar thom as an insecticido. Direct sunlight on paintings
should bo avoidod in storago; but as comploto darknoss, on the
contrary, darkon oil or varnish, a modorato light is most
