It now seems quite clear that Fifth Panzer Army is swinging
northwestwards and two of its divisions are already tapping in against
VII Corps and trying to overlap that Corps area to the west. Sixth Panzer
Army seems to have given up its attempts to break the front V Corps and
to have sheered off to the westwards.
I am disturbed at the weak local arrangements particularly
in infantry of most of the divisions in First and Ninth Armies. The div-
isions of V Corps are together 7,000 under strength, mostly infantry. 29th
Division is 2,000 below strength. Can anything be done to get replacements
for this serious discrepancy?
