Dear President:
Here I come again to bothereyou with an emblem of your recovery plan, the great-
est piece of work known to the History of our Country, a Moses to lead us out
of bondage.
We stayed with the Republicans until we found ourselves gripped in a fist of
steel, till we feel the weight of the shackles that bind our bodies to the wall
of corporations who are moulded into a kind of a political insane asylum without
a keeper whose knees are too stiff to bough to the will of God and the jingle
of money pierces their ears deeper than the cries of the needy, but still we
have a type of tumble bug politicians who are trying to roll it to us, and if we
are fool enough to swallow it, we will be filled with the filth of the Nation
and when we get sick enough to vommit we will doubt the scripture where a dog will
return to his vommit we are heartily in sympathy with your plan, eager to wear
a badge of the N. R. A. type in the interest of all the people.
I am sending you a carving of the badge appearing in the paper and in my humble
and feeble petition I am proud of the fact that we have a man of your type, who
has the back-bone to put the screws on these corporations.
From a meek and loly friend who lives by the sweat of the brow when he can get
it to do.

It gives us a great deal of pleasure

We wish this little gift to express to

We believe we are expressing the almost

Hon.President:
I will be very glad indeed if
you will accept my láttle gift which I am sending you. It was a
great pleasure doing something for a wonderful President like
you and also showing that we are doing our part I am a little
Greek lady and have done it by myself all hand made MR. Roosevelt
I hope you will be satisfied with the N.R.A.flag which was done
especially for our great President. Please don't mind if I send
the directions for washing the flag when it gets dirty.
First take some boiling water and then
add some lux flakes into a pan , than gradually all some cold
water to make enough suds The person who does the washing
does not have to be afraid of the color's fading because it
is the best thread D. When they iron it please iron the
Flag on the wrong side. The person must know how to iron very
good because if they don't the flag will not look very nice.
I am also sending MRS. Roosevelt a little
gift which I hope she will like because it will make me very
happy.
Yours very truly

My dear Mr. President,-
As I am the fortunate possessor of one of the recent Handkerchief Maps of
Washington, which has been stamped with your autograph, I know that the work of
the American Civic Association in this regard, is not unknown to you.
It has been my privilege and pleasure to present our project to the American
people through the medium of the Press, and various Clubs and Societies.
Would you, Mr. President, in order to help our cause, permit the American Civic
Association to publicly present to you, a framed Map and to Mrs Roosevelt a quilt?
If it would be your pleasure to accept, we will be pleased to make the arrangements
any time that suits yours and Mrs Roosevelt's convenience. It is our hope to have
the entire First Edition of the Handkerchief Maps of Washington disposed of by
Christmas, so that our work may continue to progress during the New Year.

My dear Mr. McIntyre,-
Thankyou for your letter of November 9th in reply to mine of November 6th
written to the President regarding the presentation of a framed Handkerchief Map
of Washington, and a Handkerchief quilt to Mrs Roosevelt.
We appreciate your courtesy and willingness to permit us to set the date of
presentation to you, on behalf of the President. Contrary to our expectations
at the time of writing, the framing of the Map has not yet been completed, as an
extra treatment of the wood has been necessary. I will therefore write you at a
later date when this has been taken care of.
Sincerely yours,

Dear President Roosevelt:
I take pleasure in presenting to you several

Mr. Alspach grew the cane and produced the
molasses in his own plant and, as you know, the
Hoosier State produces the finest sorghum.

Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt,

My dear Mr. President:
First, I want to congratulate you on your diplo-
matic triumph in the Russian matter. It is in my judgment
a victory of the first magnitude, and SO far as I can see
the credit belongs to you and you alone; next, to congratu-
late you on some of your enemies, notably those "Modern
Tailors of Tooley Street, If whose place of resort is the
corner of H and 17th Street in Washington. These naive
gentlemen, who like the "tailors" above referred to, think
they are the people of the United States. I suppose,
taken by and all, they are a lot of fine gentlemen who have
been more or less successful in business, or representing
more or less successful business enterprises, but they take
X

themselves far too seriously. I scanned the names on the
9-B
list of those present which I presume they think is a roll
of honor, and lo and behold I found the name of one gentle-
man with whom I am more or less well acquainted and who has
made a great deal of money, but unfortunately he labors
under the delusion that "mud" is spelled with two "d's",
and this is not his only academic delusion. Of course, I
can understand that a man might labor under the disadvantage
of not having a sound elementary education, but at least he
should have learned, and when I say "he" I refer to all of them,
that, when he or they add to that sort of a weakness a delu-
sion of grandeur, he and they are in a sad way. I need not
tell you to treat that kind of advice lightly because your
anticipation of what they were going to say when in your
Savannah speech you referred to them as "Tories" was just
precisely and exactly the right characterization for them
and demonstrates that you have their number.
In yesterday's "Herald Tribune" I noticed that
one Blumenthal sent you by second-hand what some people
might think to be good advice, but his method of sending it
and then publishing it in the public prints convicts him of
bad faith, And yesterday also Walter Lippman substituted for his
usual very splendid article f an apologetic viewpoint, but
fear not, Mr. President, the folks are with you, and fortu-
nately the folks feel SO outraged by the way they have been
"duped" by the banking fraternity and by the high lights in
finance that the entire crowd have been sadly and properly

discounted with the American people. It is the law of
nature that anything that does not function, dies. The
banks apparently are not functioning; no major loan of any
importance has been made in the past year and a half that
has come to my notice that was not made by your "Uncle Sam-
uel" functioning through the RFC, and it just looks to me
as though your "Uncle Samuel" will have to be in the banking
business and if the grand old man can make a worse "fizzle"
of it than those that have been at the head of them
then he isothe sharp and shrewd Yankee that he has been
pictured.
I am taking the liberty of sending to you, under
separate cover, a little book which contains some speeches
and essays by a grand old character who many years ago was
called to his Fathers. I speak of Archbishop Spaulding,
of Peoria, Illinois. The old man in this book made the best
case that I have ever read against the "lice" who have ex-
ploited this country during the past twenty years. His
statement of facts and logical conclusions to be deduced
therefrom were indictments of the old order but the old man
sought to turn it into an argument in support thereof. The
book is full of "meat", it is short, you can read it in an
hour. He is a splendid stylist of the old school, and
taken all in all was one of the wondersul men developed in
the hierarchy of my grand old church. If you get as much
out of the Archbishop's book as I have gotten in the past,
you will consult it from time to time when you are looking
for a telling phrase or a well-termed sentence, or for a
sound argument, and you will find them all in the old Arch-
bishop's text,
In conclusion, permit me to say, my dear Mr.
President, that there is nothing that you have that I want,
sa ve and except your "good will" and that I flatter myself
I already have, but whether I have or have not is beside
the question. I have no aspirations to take a place in that
bright light that surrounds the throne. I only want to
serve and wait. If there is anything that I can do in the
capacity of a private citizen to help uphold your hands in
these trying hours, rely upon it that I await the command,
With assurances of my highest personal esteem,
I am,

We, as you doubtless know, are operating in Brazil,
and one of the staff of our affiliated company "Emprezas Electricas
Brasileiras" has devoted several years to the study of Matte. He
has been assigned to cooperate with the Brazilian Government and
the Matte growers in promoting its use, as a result of which Dr.
Brasil's request was referred to him. After due consideration,
he has chosen Lacerda Matte as the best type, and we take great
pleasure in forwarding it on to you.
Being a Matte enthusiast, may I presume to suggest
that same be made and served exactly as tea. You should use one
teaspoonful to a cup of water and add one for the pot.
If I can be of further service please command me.

Dear Mr. Early:
Attached to this letter in a package you
will find a volume of "Christmas, Il the only
religious Christmas annual to my knowledge
published in the United States. I wonder if
you will do me the favor of presenting this
to the President with our compliments.
Although I realize that there are both ridicu-
lous and excessive demands for personal favors,
as a matter of sentiment it would be very much
appreciated if by chance I might have an
acknowledgment signed by the President. I will
leave that up to you.
Sincerely yours,
