Writes Gen. Watson that he was informed that at the time of the diplomatic
reception the President informed the Minister of Czechoslovakia that he desired to

requests that he be received by the President. Asks if possible for the President
to receive him on Feb. 1. -- 2/12/40, letter to Gen. Watson from Mr. Summerlin
saying the Minister of Czechoslovakis is now in Washington; understood that the

Christmas Day
The President,
White House,
Washington, D. C,
My dear Mr. President;-
Kindly permit "Old Doc Bowen", who to use your own
words "is still running for Congress" in your own Congressional District,
to extend to yourself and family, his heartiest wishes for a splendid
Christmas, and Happy New Year,
He sends you under another cover his booklet entitled
"True American Patriotism", which will make history in your and his district.
In that booklet your old friend Ham Fish? is given a dressing down such as
few public men have ever received, because the writer is going to do to
him next year, what your old friend "Dick Connell" did to his grandfather.
I do not think you will shed any bears over that,-as Ham Fish, has been a
bitter, unrelenting enemy of yours. Please look the booklet over, at your
leisure and enjoy yourself. Needlessto say, I am still running, just as
"Dick Connell" did for many years before he won out,
Sincerely and most respectfully,

Dear Missy:
I am sorry to have so long delayed acknowledg-

commuting to Florida, my correspondence has been con-
siderably neglected.
I am glad you liked the Madeira. I hope I
can keep on sending it to you and to the Boss at least
until 1990.
I went down to the Jackson Day Dinner and the
President, sitting between the high-pink complexions
of Jim Farley and Vice President Garner, looked a little
pale. I do hope you can persuade him to come down to
Florida and get a little sunshine. You can tell him
that this time he doesn't have to catch his own fish
unless he wants to because our chef at the Tower can
do a broiled pampano with almonds, and some of my own
1921 Chateau Yquem on the side, to a President's taste.
The invitation goes double for you, and in
the evenings you can pick up a few new rhumba steps
from the amateur champion himself.

Nashville, Tenn.
January 29, 1940
Writes to Mrs. Roosevelt stating that she has been for some time deeply interested
in plans for having a portrait of Andrew Jackson's "beloved Rachel" palced in the
White House in the vacant sapce opposite President Jackson's portrait. Says that Mrs.
Jay G. Stephenson, State Chairman of the Tennessee Federation of Democratic Women,
will be in Washington shortly, and asks if Mrs. Roosevelt will grant her an audience
re the above. Also expresses her interest in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library.
Asks if Mrs. Roosevelt would like to have for this Library, or for her own collection,
a bound volume of Harper's Magazine for December, 1852, to May, 1855, which contains,
among other things, a delightfully illustrated article called a "Skethh of Washington
City". Says she will be glad to send it on, in the event Mrs. Roosevelt wants it.--
Under date of Feb. 9, 1940, Mrs. Roosevelt's Secretary wrote to Mrs. Caldwell stating
that the President would very much like to have the above volume of Harper's Magazine.
On Feb. 20, 1940, Miss LeHand wrote to Mrs. Caldwell thanking her, on the President's
behalf for the volume, above mentioned.

My dear Mr. Rowe:
I am asked by Judge Thomas Carrick Burke, 3808S. W. Hewett

of his delightful book about a grandfather and his grandson.
Judge Burke, who writes for the press as "The Leprechaun", has

from your office.
Judge Burke asked me to deliver the book in person, but I

I notice by the papers and over the radio
that your birthday will on the 30th, of this month, and also
that you walk with a cain, therefore 1. am sending today a cane
1. made from mostly from old original native timber rail road
ties from the old panama Rail Road built by the French some places
of the rail road was in the line of the canal,
I was one of the pioneers who went there in Dec, I904 as steam shovel
engineer receiveing my appointment as such direct from Washington
leaveing my wife and four small girls at our home in Toledo Ohio
very much against the advise of many of my friends all of who believed
no white person who was not a native of that country could live there
I had seventeen years of experiance as steam shovel engineer before goeing
there , Was one of the first to operate a steam shovel on the Chicago
Drainage Canal, the conditions therewas far worse than they were in
panama, my intention was when 1. went to panama was to stay only dureing
the winter as there was no work to be had at home in my line duering
the winter, 1 was in good health and found after a few months 1. could
stand all the hardships existing there at that time, good pay and a,
steady job meant much to me, and 1. had my family come there but as
there was no schools suitable for them there at that time 1. sent them
to Riverside California and after over ten years of continueos service
from start to finish of the canal and goeing thru, tha canal on the
firs boat the Christobal,i joined my family and have lived in gal, ever
twenty two years here in San Diego.
I will be Eighty years old Feb, 29th, this year and have a real birth
day. My wife is just one week younger than myself, each of us are
in as good health as can be expected at our age.
Dear Mr, president. I hope you will if 1t is not too late give your
support to the bill now before Congress H.R.1674 report No 671 at
least part paragraph 3-4-5-6 relative to placeing all who served
six years or more Sixty per cent of salaries paid them dureing this
time which we are more or at least as much entitled to as the enlisted
employes had.
The long depression has wiped out about all we have now have some
$1400 mortgage on our home, a pension as outlined for us will be
highly appreciated and give you assistance in the above bill.
