My dear Mr. Roosevelt:
I assumed you might be interested
in reading the little booklet of essays being
mailed to you with this note. They have been
informally read by little groups, indicated
in the Foreword but are published for the
first time.
Possibly you may recall that as
candidate in 1932, I bombarded you with an all
embracing questionnaire, which despite your pre-
occupation, you did consider serious enough to
answer in a general way. Presuming on this
marked courtesy I now send you a copy of my im-
pressions and experiences which also I trust
you may some time find the leisure to peruse.

Dear Mac:
I am sending you and the Boss each a basket of Temple
Oranges grown in Texas. I have sent a basket of these each year
to the President for the past five years. It is possible that
owing to the great number of similar gifts sent the President
that some of them are consigned to hospitals and other places.
I am sending these because of their superiority. The
Temple Orange is a new product and I wish you would call the
Boss's attention to them so that he and Mrs. Roosevelt may
enjoy them. They are distinct and different from other oranges
and much better.

Miss LeHand referred to him for advice as to reply a letter addressed to the
President from Thomas Kearny, NYC, who wants some sort of information to enable him
to complete a biography he is writing of his grandfather, Major General Philip Kearny.
Mr. Delano, on Feb. 18th, wrote Miss LeHand that he was making some inquiries of the
Archives Division of the State Department and also Mr. R. D. W. Connor, Archivist of
the United States, and hopes soon to give Miss LeHand the result of his investigation.
Mr. Delano said he had, also, written to Mr. Kearny that he was looking up this infor-
mation. Mr. Delano added a postecript saying "Did the President receive an interesting
book about an old Californian Pioneer named Alonzo Delano, who wrote under the Pen Name
of "Old Block". States he delivered this book early in January 1936. --Date of Mr. Kearny
letter was Feb. 3rd.

Sir:
We noted in the public press, to our constern-
ation, your predicament when about to dress recently.
As our Chief Executive the eyes of the nation
are focused upon you, and the unfavorable reaction
that might occur if they were to adopt the same
emergency measure is obvious.
To forestall the possibility of having you
undergo a similar inconvenience at some future time,
we are forwarding you, under separate cover, a set
of links, studs and vest buttons which we will ask
you to use as a "secondary set" when, as, and if
your originals are again mislaid.
Please be assured that our best wishes accom-

MAY THE RECEIVED 8 WHITE 1936 HOUSE
May 6, 1936.
To the Honorable, Franklin D. Roosevelt,
President of the United States,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. Roosevelt:
For some time I have been conducting an independent
survey of underlying economic causes within the United States which have
contributed to recent depression conditions. I have also attempted to
analyze the extent and effectiveness of many recent relief activities.
The results of this study have been published under
the title "Dividends for Citizenship", and I very much wish to present
a copy of this book to you. I have requested that the publisher forward
it to you directly. It may already have arrived.
In the conduct of this investigation, I have become
increasingly convinced of the fact that re-employment alone will never
provide a sufficient means of accomplishing all of the economic correc-
tion which is needed. Every possible means of employment is, of course,
to be desired and encouraged, and the greatest apparent means for accom-
plishing an increase in employment will be the stimulation of more pro-
duction, caused by an increase in consumer purchasing power.
In this book, I have attempted an analysis of various
proposals which have recently occupied public attention, together with a
summary and tabulated projection of the results of the Social Security Act
as passed in 1935, with a frank appraisal of the likelihood of their ac-
complishing the objectives stated. Likewise, I have endeavored to out-
line a self-sustaining program which would lift entirely the need now
being handled through relief agencies from the budgets of city, state and
nation, and which points toward a possible ending of Government deficits.
I am placing this book before you in the hope that you
may find time to read it, and that you may find in it some suggestions or
ideas of value.
J.L.Sothins Very respectfully,

Dear Sir:-
As our business has been going good I wish to show my
appreciation, and let you know just what I had said and planed to do.
I said if we could get a loan to help us get our business straightened
out I would make a quilt for you.
I had seen a quilt of flowers and names of the States, So I
thought I would make that one, but the day we received The Home Loan,
I received a, Home Art, paper and in it was this quilt of the map of the
United States, so I said that is the quilt I will make for,"The President
of the United States, I am very glad I have made this quilt. For our
help from the loan sure has made a big help to us and "I sure THank You".
We had been in a hard place at one time for there were so
many bills to pay. But I am SO happy to say that we are doing fine now
and hope this success will last. And I am glad that I had good success
to get the quilt finished. I had hoped to have it done along time ago,
but I love work and I have a lot of work to do. Now that I have the
quilt finished on, "Easter Sunday", I am glad and I will send it soon.
Hoping It reaches you in good shape and I hope you have
