Believing the virtues portrayed in this picture
to be as dear to your heart as they are to mine and all
other true Americans I am taking the liberty of presenting
it to you.
It was taken from my float at our recent Gallopade

I have always wanted to don my Uncle, Sam costume

Honorable Sir:
We are this day mailing you our new book titled, "Stop the Slaughter,"
with our compliments.
This book covers a subject that is being widely discussed today by the
general public, and one that we feel sure you will wish to endorse.
Namely, "Common Sense Driving and Pedestrian Rules."
As organizer of the National Traffic Safety Engineers, we have given
the matter of City and Highway safety a great deal of study, and we
believe this our first book published, mainly as a school textbook,
should have the support of every public spirited citizen in the United
States. We wish to do our part, therefore, we believe our book placed
in the schools is one step in the right direction.
The momentous task of reducing the death and fatality rate upon the
city streets and highways is one of the major issues of the day.
We welcome constructive suggestions on ways and means of furthering
our plan of making the driving and walking public use "Common Sense
Driving and Pedestrain Rules."
Please inform us if you like our book, and we shall feel our efforts
have been well repaid.
I have the honor to remain,
Most respectfully yours,

DRIVER TRAINING
Key Sought to Accident Prevention
Renewed interest in the proposal for
driver training courses in the secondary
school throughout the state is indicated
in editorial expressions on the issue, ac-
cording to *recent editorials by Safety
Counselors.
These men are convinced that a child taught
to drive correctly and carefully would be no
more likely to drive carelessly, wrongly and
dangerously than a child taught to speak and
spell correctly would be likely to speak and
spell incorrectly, deliberately or for lack of
established habits.
They contend that, if the rising generation is
not allowed to take the wheels of a car until
they have been properly instructed, the number
of traffic accidents will be reduced tremendously
in a few years.
These counselors report that after a conference
with a number of school heads and city officials,

Envoy Extraordinary
Minister Plenipotentiary of the Union of South Africa,
3101 Massachusetts Avenue N.W.
Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. Minister:
On occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the found-
ing of DeBeers Consolidated Mines, Limited, the Directors
decided to have prepared a history of the Company, and
for that purpose engaged Mr. Hedley Chilvers, as well-
known South African author and present mining editor of
the "Rand Daily Mail".
The book is now in course of publication with the
title "The Story of DeBeers". Several "DeLuxe" editions
are being prepared and it is the intention to present a
copy to Their Majesties King George and Queen Mary.
It has been suggested to me by my colleagues on the
Board that a copy of the "DeLuxe" edition might also be
presented to President and Mrs. Roosevelt, and I an venturing
to appeal toyou for advice.
Would it be possible - through channels open to you -
to ascertain whether President and Mrs. Roosevelt would
accept from the Directors a copy of the "DeLuxe" edition?
With thanks for any help you can give.
With kind regards.
Yours sincerely,
H. T. DICKINSON

LEGATION OF
THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA
WASHINGTON, D.C.
8th March, 1940.
My dear Mr. Summerlin,
On the 26th June and 12th July last year, we exchanged
letters relative to the wish of the Board of Directors of
the DeBeers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., to be allowed to have
the honour of presenting to the President and Mrs. Roose-
velt a copy, when it should be completed, of the De Luxe
Edition of a work then under preparation for the Company -
being the "Story of DeBeers".
You informed me of the gracious acceptance of this
offer by the President and Mrs. Roosevelt.
The copy to be sent to them arrived yesterday after-
noon. Over the telephone you confirmed your previous offer
to undertake to see that it is duly delivered.
With this book arrived a letter from the Directors to
the President and Mrs. Roosevelt asking their acceptance
of the book.
I now, pursuant to your offer, send the book and the
letter for the purpose of being delivered to the President
and Mrs. Roosevelt.
I may say that the book has more than fulfilled my
expectations of its character as indicated in my letter to
you on the 26th June. It is a very fascinating story, at
least to us South Africans: and is worthy of the great
Corporation - "DeBeers" - who have had it prepared.
The parcel sent to you is, as you see, addressed to
the recipients themselves. Nevertheless both the outside
wrapper which contained the parcel, and was addressed to
me - and the inside wrapper itself addressed to the Presi-
dent - have been opened in the Post or the Customs. I
send the book in its own brown paper wrapper as I received
it.
Yours sincerely,

Knowing how thoroughly you enjoy fishing, it
was our hope that you might have had the opportunity this
summer of trying your skill at Lake Superior deep-sea
trolling. However, since a visit here was impractical,
and in order that you might still learn something of the
delights of a Lake Superior Trout dinner, we have sent to
Mrs. Nesbitt, for the Presidential table, trout you might
have caught had your visit to the Minnesota Arrowhead
Country materialized, These trout were caught today
during the Lake Superior Trout Roundup, sponsored by our

Dear Mr President. Enclosed find a book" War If is Hell" written by
me at my own expense, which I have sent pretty well over Iowa
to the Banks.
Please do not think there is any one or any organization which
induced me to write this book. There are many Millions of people
here who do not have any opportunity to know the truth about Europe,
They have never lived there ( I was in business there two Years)
and in the middle west 53 years here in the good old U.S. then why
should I hesitate to write this book. It is based upon close observation
and actual experience.
There can not possibly belasting peace in Europe untill there is
consolidation of the European states into a UNITED STATES OF EUROPE,
and real friendship and square dealing.
This little book explains in detail andgives reasons which can
not be contraverted succesfully. More Bombing Planes for Europe
and more Gun Boats sent there from here will NOT do it. Age old
injustice must be righted. A new deal is in the making, The age
old enmety between France and Germany has allways been propelled by
Brittish interests. we here in the United states of America are
only interested in good amiable trade relations and should take no
sides with their own neighborly relations.
We have had our troubles years ago between the North and the south
what would have happened if there would have been a permament devision ?
My Booklett explains why Europe MUST consolidate at this time.
It should have happened in 1917, then the present strife would
have been avoided. we would perhaps be 75 Billions to the good.
The Western Hemisphere is safe so long as there is orderly trade
relations.
Please accept this book with my compliments, I only wish it
could be read by your entire official familie.
Yours very truly
W. H. Daubendiek.

My dear Mr. Early:
Would the President accept
a painting of himself, presented to him by the
artist? All of my life I have been an admirer
of Lincoln, and I firmly believe that when
history records the life of President Roosevelt,
--his greatness, his tenderness, his humanitarian
acts, his championing of the welfare of the
masses against the greedy money powers that seek
to wield the whip on both Congress and the
President, --he will occupy a place next to
Lincoln in the admiration and love of his people.
The late Governor Henry Horner,
of Illinois, who was a close personal friend of
President Roosevelt, and a great admirer of
Lincoin, favored me with a personal letter paying
his tribute to Abraham Lincoln. T wonder if it
is at all possible for President Roosevelt to
pay his tribute in a few lines to Mr. Lincoln,
that I might have it to frame and hang beside
that of Governor Horner's? I would treasure same
very very highly, because of my great admirati
of Mr. Roosevelt and t at of Lincoln both.

Surely the President and his family could

he has ever had a taste of our delicious Pascal Celery?
I know I have sent it to the President before and other

I wonder if you, yourself, have ever tasted
our Pascal Celery? If you haven't, I would like to
send a taste with our compliments. Our Senators, Adams
