My Friend:
In the last election on November 5, 1940, I had made a vow; that
if Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected for a third term, I would make
him an Indian gift with my own hands, and since he was reelected, I am
now carrying out that intention by sending him 10 arrows, 1 bow, and one
quiver. These articles are all made by me, and I hope that you will ac-
cept my humble offer as a gift to fulfill my vow.
The six bone arrow heads represented arrows used by the Indians
about 800 years ago, and the four other arrows represented those used by
the Indians after Columbus came to America when they had the use of metal.
The wooden part of the arrows are made from the branches of a wild cherry
tree that grow locally, and the bow is made from ash tree also local tree.
Some of the feather used are eagle feathers and the others are turkey tail
feathers.
My good friend I give you these so you may show them to your many
good friends. I am now 70 years old and a poor man.
Respectfully,
William William Gay, Gay.

Dear Mr. Roosevelt:
I am expecting to be in Washington on Monday the 27th
and Tuesday the 28th of this month in order to discuss
with my national director of the Writers' Project the
possible usefulness our program might be in providing
defense educational material for the public schools.
I am vitally interested in this work, and in connection
with it, I am also interested in the possibility of a
series of photographs to be used, if you approve, in re-
lation to your speech of October 24th which you were
kind enough to send me some weeks ago.
Is there the slightest chance of my being able to talk to
you for about five minutes on either Monday the 27th or
Tuesday the 28th? Perhaps this is an unheard of request
from just a private citizen. If it is possible I would
be more than grateful.

Dear Mr. Larly:
Incrosed is a copy of a letter that I wrote to the President
some days ago. It will explain itself.
My trip to washington has been dejayed. I find now that I
will be in Washington on the 6th and 7th of rebruary. I know
that my hope to see the President for a few minutes on the
27th or 28th of this month was requested at a very busy time,
and on very short notice. I now hope that perhaps my being in
Washington on the 6th and 7th of February will make it more
possible. If there is any chance of my seeing him for a few
minutes on either of these days I will be more than grateful.

My dear Judge Gamble:
Thank you very much for your letter of
December 30. I wish we could arrange it so that
Mr. Gallo might present his gift to the President
in person. However, since the international situa-
tion became so acute we have found it necessary to
ask all persons desiring to bring in personal gifts
for the President to leave them with me in my capacity
as Appointment Secretary. I receive them for him and
pass them along with a word of explanation. It would
be appreciated, therefore, if you will explain to
Mr. Gallo that I will be glad to receive either in
person or by mail the gift which he has made for the
President, and will await his further advice.
At the same time please assure Mr. Gallo
of the President's deep appreciation of his
thoughtfulness.
With all good wishes,
Sincerely yours,

Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt
President of The United States
Washington D. C.,
Dear Mr Roosevelt;
I am taking this opportunity of writing you, with reference
to the craftmanship work of one of most loyal and ardent
Democrats, namely Mr John Gallo of Clinton Avenue, Oakdale,
Pennsylvania.
Mr Gallo in his spare time for the past eight months has
worked and completed a very wonderful and hand carved, framed
xP.P.7.
picture of you, our most able servant.
9-P
The approximate size of the entire frame and picture would be
three or four feet square. The wood is all hand carved and
around the entire frame he carved forty-eight stars, represent-
ing the forty-eight states, out of lead and silver. On the top
of the frame he has carved and worked in wood an American Flag.
Personally I have never seen a better piece of craftmanship of
this type of work.
Now comes our problem, Mr Gallo very, very earnestly insists,
that I as Democratic Chairman of Borough of Oakdale, contact
you in some manner to see that you receive this picture as
his gift to you.
Mr President, the people of this locality have all practically
viewed this picture and I know they would be more than gratified
to know that you will accept Mr. Gallo's gift.
Hoping you will find time to give this matter a few minutes time,
and wishing you and your family a most Happy and Prosperous New
Year, I remain.
truly yours
Dale Gamble, Democratic Chr.
Oakdale Pennsylvania.

prompted you to present it to him on the occasion
of his inauguration.

Dear Mr. Roosevelt:
Under a separate cover, with our compliments, I am sending
you a copy of our friend, Lord Tweedsmuir's, final novel, MOUNTAIN
MEADOW. Perhaps you read his PILGRIM'S WAY, which we published last
autumn. If so, or indeed, in any case, you will note the (for his
friends) poignant vein of psychological autobiography that runs
through this, his last story.
Believe me, with the most profound satisfaction in your handling
of the international affairs of the United States in the present
crisis,
Sincerely yours,

Dear President,
Wanted to send you these two small items
long ago but have been deep in a novel script
I call The Roots Go Deep. It is a gentle
tale of American living as has to deal with
the farm and wide horizons about fields of

I consider your Administration very much
like the years Lincoln knew. As a Lincoln

Good luck to you always.
