Honorable Franklin Delano Roosevelt,
President of the United States,
Washington, D. C.
February 3, 1942.
Dear Mr. President:
On the occasion of your sixtieth birthday anniversary I take
the liberty, although a little belatedly, in sending you by mail
a result of my hubby, namely a reproduction of your likeness done
on wood. Your likeness was reproduced on a 5-ply wood board, with
several types of inlaid veneers of 1/16" in thickness. All wood
used, except the border, are natural in colors. A more detailed
decription of the piece, also its photograph taken when finished,
will be found enclosed herewith.
I am a Greek by birth, age 46. I am a maintenance engineer by
trade. I have entered the United States as a member of a ship's
crew in 1922 and have obtained my certificate of Registry as a legal
resident on January 2, 1942 (Number of the Registry Certificate
174588). I have just submitted my application for second papers,
because my wife is an American Citizen.
My native country, Greece, looks towards America and the
other great powers fighting on all the fronts, as to the arsenals
of Democracy supplying the arms and implements of war now going
on in the five continents and the seven oceans. This country,
side by side with all the other countries fighting the worst
enemy mankind has ever encountered, Nazyism and Fascism, will
finally triumph; justice and equality of opportunity for all,
for the common man, will prevail.
Please accept the result of my humble effort which I am
sending.
Wishing you many more birthdays, I am,
Respectfully,

The White House

My dear Miss Tully:
I wish to thank you for your kind letter of May 19th.
I am very grateful for its contents.
The bust of General MacArthur was executed by me
in a moment of enthusiasm for the great hero who will go down in history.
The execution was hampered by the lack of a good likeness of the General.
I worked mostly from pictures which appeared in newspapers and periodicals,
which were not particularly conducive to perfect execution. Before cast-
ing the mold for the actual bronze bust, which I will ship to the Presi-
dent upon completion, I should like to do a little retouching. If you
could procure a good photograph of the General and send it to me, it would
be very helpful and I would be very grateful.
My greatest yearning is to execute a bust to the
greatest champion of democracy and victory, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and
if you could obtain for me at least two poses of the President, and send
me two full face and two profile views, I am sure I could reproduce a
very good likeness. I would prefer a very recent picture as I want to
execute him as he looks today, his likeness showing the indelible marks
created by the turbulent times he has passed and is passing through.
I am sure he has been sculptured many times but I too should like the
honor and privilege to reproduce him as he looks today.
It may be that this is too much to ask and that I

Dear Mac:
I'm very happy that you liked that little
souvenir -- and I'm glad, too, that the Boss displayed
so much interest in the thing.
of course, I'll be glad to give him a copy --
but don't you think he might like to have a little
set of, say, a half-dozen of my big hits that might
include "Lightnin', 11 "Turn to the Right, TT "Three
Wise Fools, "The First Year," "Seventh Heaven,"
"Let Us Be Gay," "Susan and God," and "Claudia,"
in a binding just like yours, but with the Presi-
dent's name on the back of them?
Tell me if you think it'll be diplomatic --
or at least, if I can use as an excuse the fact that
you said he seemed interested.
?
Certainly, I would like to do it. So give
me a hint and I'll order the printer to make up a
set of them without delay.

Mr. Marvin McIntyre,
The White House,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mac:
Those books for the President finally got here.
Miss Thompson was in New York with Mrs. Roosevelt
and, taking a package back to Washington for Mrs. Roosevelt's
birthday, she also offered to take the books -- and I was
glad to have her do it because it made a sort of birthday
present for Mrs. Roosevelt to deliver to the President.
With the package I sent the following letter:
"Dear Mr. President:
"It was Marvin McIntyre who inferred
that these souvenirs of my checkered career
might not be unwelcome. -- So blame him.
"Of the nearly two-hundred plays I
have produced, these seven are, I think,
my favorites.
"Please accept them with my sincere
admiration -- best wishes and many happy
returns of the First Lady's birthday.
Faithfully."
With my very best personal regards to you, and
hoping to see you here soon,
