You may find interest in the enclosed clipping from
the January 4 issue of the Chicago Herald-American
which appeared under a caption "Will Razor Famine
Add Whiskers to War Horrors?". I think in the light
of the fine manner in which the war effort now is
being prosecuted, none of us need fear such hirsute
consequences as have been depicted in the enclosed
clipping concerning you and other distinguished
personalities.
I have the honor to serve as a client the Curtiss
Candy Company of Chicago, which, through one of its
subsidiaries - The Duer Sales Company, has developed
and placed on the market an inexpensive and effi-
cient razor blade sharpener known as Spee-D-Hone.
The origin of this item is particularly interesting
because it is a by-product of a war industry, being
made from surplus supplies of an abrasive powder
which was developed for use in grinding precision
parts of airplane engines.
It is estimated that if only one-half of American
shavers re-hone their blades on this type of sharpener,
getting thirty or more shaves per blade instead of
throwing them away after one or two shaves, approxi-
mately ten thousand tons of the finest cutlery steel
could be saved annually. At the same time, it would
help solve the present razor blade shortage.

At the request of Mr. Otto Schnering, president of
Curtiss Candy Company, I am sending you one of these
Spee-D-Hones with his compliments as a means of help-
ing you to delay the consequences forecast in the
Herald-American picture story if the razor blade
famine becomes too acute.
With kindest personal regards, I am

To - The Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt.
President of"TheeUnited-States"
The White-House:
My dear Mr. President:
Your "George-Washington" address at the Mayflower last night was an inspiration
to me, and it also should have been to the other 130,000,000 Americans, it was indeed
well delivered; and I heard every word of it, and appreciatédeyour remarks. Permit
me in my humble to say that I am only a low-paid clerk at "Maritime" here and also
have been in the same capacity under the old Shipping Bd. M.FC. where I started in
May 1918, giving me now 25 years of service.
Herewith in a long package I am enclosing some pictures which I have collected at
randon, and which I know you will appreciate. I am starting the set off with dear
old Jerusalem - showing 2 American fliers looking over the old section; then the
"Annunciation", Mother and Child, the adoration of the "Maji" at the crib; at
Bethlehem, then the Global conference of your worthy self and Mr. Churchill at
Casablanca. The last, and larger one of the group is of the visit to you in
December, 1942 of its President, Excmo - Sr. Dr. Carlos Arrayo Del Rio of Ecuador.
Under his and your photograph's you will note: "Democratic - Tridogy" typed by me
in 8 paragraphs, these are pointed ones as expressed by the Paper-La-Prensa - as
you will note.
Now, Mr. President, 1 could not have these framed as I would like to have done, but
if you can recall, I, in 1935 sent you a small one which was framed same was the plant-
ing of a "peace-Tree" in the "Pan-American"patio, at 17th & Constitution Ave.N.W. In
this picture were - President Wm. Howard Taft - Andrew Carnegie, - Elihu Root -
James Cardinal Gibbons 5 of Baltimore - Bishop Freeman of the episcopal diocese of
Washington - John Barrett of the Pan-American Union and others, and if you can remember,
Miss LeHand, then your private Secretary, sent me a very nice letter of acceptance, and
I have that in my scrap-book with so many others, whichII value very much indeed.
By the way, Mr. President, how is Miss LeHand? Now I am well aware you are tired of this
note because you have on your hands "WAR" that requires of you to think, and to direct -
a war of all wars - the greatest this Country has ever had; but have no fear "AMERICA"
is in the hands, and - under the patronage of "The Immaculate Conception", the patroness
of Catholics, and their prayers for peace as well as the pryyers of all of other creeds g
go up to God on high; she will ask her beloved Son to stop this terrible unwanted on-
slaught, this shedding of blood, and the taking of human lives; and all of the miseries
it has already cost us, and the millions of other peoples who ask us for succor-
liberty, and freedom. For bread and the things which sustains ours, and their material
existance, and subsistance - down to the Milk for Children and orphans of the other
nations who are with us to the very end.
Here again, Mr. President, I quote yours words of last night "The Beatitudes" you
mentioned in your speech of last night; I am a Catholic, and in all of our Churches, we
daily say the prayers for Peace and that war will end soon. Wishing you Gods Blessings,
and also say to Mrs. Roosevelt, that she has been a guiding star in your 2 administrations
and I can predict that the people of this country want you for 4 time. Belive me in all
I have said, and God bless you and yours,
Very sincerely
/s/ FRANK C. HEIL
