The latest Clipper, NC-18612, recently delivered
by the manufacturer, is being transferred to Government
ownership for service on this South Atlantic route. In
view of your personal interest in this program, which we
hope will be of real value in maintaining communications
and delivering aircraft so urgently needed in the Near
East, I thought you might possibly wish to have for your
desk a small ash tray embodying a model of this latest
Clipper.
As a result of recent engine and aerodynamic im-
provements, she will be capable of carrying forty-five
passengers in addition to her flight crew of eleven across
the South Atlantic.
Assuring you of our desire to assist in any way
possible in the grand fight for democracy being carried on
under your leadership and guidance, I remain
Respectfully,
Juan Tripper

Dear Mr. Early:
Under separate cover we are sending
the President a copy of Pastor Martin Niemoeller's
last book of twenty eight sermons entitled " God
is my Fuehrer", with an introduction by Thomas
Mann, which we are publishing on October 31st.
The struggle for religion, in its
highest manifestation, to survive in a land of
barbarism and intellectual blight is symbolized
by the person of Martin Niemoeller and his fellow
sufferer, the Catholic priest Father Ruper Mayer,
who were both haled to a concetration camp.
In his preface Thomas Mann says in
one place: "A mere fraction of this terrible and
arbitrary miscarriage of justice ( Pastor Niemoeller's
arrest and incarceration) would ordinarily have arous-
ed the indignation of the civilized world and caused
it to break relations with the regime that had per-
pretrated such a crime, isolating it and shaming
it in the eyes of its own people, and so bringing
about its downfall. Feeble and fearful, blind and
imperturbable civilized world!"

The sermons declare in impassioned speech
that the realm of the spirit, of God, is not the
realm of Nazi and Hitler Germany.
You will also find in Pastor Niemoeller's
sermons a fiery excoriation of the Nazi race
theories and the persecution of the Jewish people.
" God is my Fuehrer" will be discussed by
br
three distinguished clergymen over the air on
November 2nd at 5 pm. The book has been approved
by them--Dr. Charles S. Mac Barland, Secretary
Emeritus of the Federal Council of the Churches
of Christ, Father Francis X. Talbot, editor of
America, and Rabbi Louis I Newman.
My purpose in writing you is to call your
attention at this time to the appositeness of the
person of Pastor Niemoeller and his writings to
the current crisis, to the President's noble effort
to defend and liberate religion, to further toler-
ance and justice. The three clergymen mentioned
above the challenge to civilization launched by
Thomas Mann in the preface to the book.
I trust you will Find the book helpful
in your efforts to combat the forces of darkness.

TABER, Louis J.
Master
The National Grange
Columbus, Ohio
October 27, 1941
Wrote to Mr. Early stating that he understands the many burdens on the President
which prevent him being present at the Worcester Session of the National Grange. Says
one of the reasons they desired the President there for the ceremony was that they
hoped to present him with his Twenty-Five-Year Membership Pin, prepared especially
for the occasion. Inquires whether it would be in proper form to announce the presenta-
tion at that time, and later present the pin and Silver Star Certificate in Washing-
ton. Expresses appreciation for the President's letter of greetings to be read at
the Session. Attached is a pamphlet entitled "Honoring Grange Founders". - Mr.
Early replied on Oct. 31, 1941, assuring Mr. Taber that the President is proud of
his long membership in the National Grange, and stating that he would be greatly
pleased if it were possible for him to attend the meeting. However, since it is not
possible for him to attend, says it would be entirely proper to announce the award
of the pin at that thime. States that the Silver Star Certificate could be presented
here later. Expresses appreciation on behalf of the President.

Writes to the President presenting him with a baton. Says that on Oct. 31st,
at Erie, Pennsylvania, and continuing daily. - except Sundays - through several hundred
cities and towns in the State of Pennsylvania - finishing on Armistice Day at Inde-
pendence Hall, Philadelphia, 2600 school boys carried this baton which contains a
pledge of allegiance to the United States with a promise to keep themselves physi-
cally fit. Says further that this event was conceived by Mr. C. L. Walsh of the
Pittsburgh Public Schools, conducted by Mr. Edmund Wicht of the Pennsylvania Inter-
Scholastic Athletic Association, and sponsored by the Division of Physical Fitness
of the Office of Civilian Defense. The purpose of the above was to attract attention
of the people of the Nation and particularly so, those in the State of Pennsylvania,
to the vital importance of sports and athletics in the development of Physical Fitness.-
Attached memo of telephone calls for Gen.Watson, 11/26/41, indicates that a Mr.
Rosenberg, in Mayor Samuel's office called from Philadelphia re this baton; and an
office memo for Gen. Watson, 11/28/41, signed "W.D.S." indicates that the Mayor of
Philadelphia, sent in by a Philadelphia police officer the attached baton, and that
Mr. Simmons accepted the above letter from Mayor Samuel and the baton, "as the
