LeHand PRIVATE SECRETARY Reverend Sterling Roberts, 2120 Fifth Avenue, North, Birmingham, Alabama. es X ALFRED L. REEVE Prospector. THE WHITE noved DEC 20 10 56 AM '37 STERLING ROBERTS RECEIVED bauk niee letter me evangelist 2120 AVE. NORTH BIRMINGHAM ALA. December 17 1937 President Franklin D. Roosevelt Washington, D. C. My dear Mr. Roosevelt: It has been six years since I have written you a line. However, the personal letters I received from you while you were Governor of New York, I appreciate highly. Many times, during the past trying years, my friends in Alabama have requested me to write to you concerning various matters. Proir to this time, I have not written since you have been President, for the simple reason that I conscientiously felt I had not one single suggestion to make that would be worth taking up one moment of your valuable time. YOU ARE ON THE JOB. Fully realizing that you have just sixty minutes in eahh hour, and only so many working hours a day, I have refrainèd from writing since you have occupied the White House, I have often stated publicly that you are making the best President that your environment will allow you to make. You are standing to the rack nobly. Weaker men would have fallen long ago. Apropo your letter of October 16th 1931 in which, among other things, you said: "It is a great encouragement to one who tries to do his best in public office, to feel that he has won the good opinion of men like yourself, these lines are typed. So, if it will do your heart any good for me to say to you at this critical time, that my humble opinion is that, all angles weighed, no man in all history has made a greater leader than you; then you have the sincere statement, My words to you September 16th 1931: "Your neighbors believe in you; the nation will,' 11 read like prophesy now. ALFRED L. REEVE Prospector. 2 The nation does believe in you. Even the tools of self- ish interests, who are sticking pins in you, believe in you. But, the American people will continue, not only to believe prevail. in you, but also, to BE WITH you; and RIGHT will ultimately Under seperate cover, I am sending you one of my recent little books, indulging the hope that you may find something in it of interest to you. Hoping that you have fully recovered from your recent slight indisposition, and praying God's blessings for a continuance of your health, physical and otherwise, I remain as ever, Sincerely your friend, Sterling Raberts ALFRED L. REEVE Prospector. [COPY:BFB:SS] [COMP: F.C.R. 45-32:20-25 [Literal copy] Toronto, Canada, 8, St. Joseph St. Jan 17/38. To, PPF The Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, Washington D. C. Dear Mr. Secretary of State, Am very pleased that The President, yourself, and Miss LeHand liked the first Coronation Silver Dollar in the world. I am doubly repaid when I know they gave you a little pleasure, and I do hope they will always remind you of your President's and your own visit to Canada in as (H.M. King George VI said in His Christmas Radio Message) "This unforgettable year." And now am enclosing clippings, snapshot, and British coins. For The President, yourself, and Miss LeHand. This 12 sided coin, 1st time a British coin would stand on Edge. Being recalled and no more minting I believe, because they were using them for gas meters instead of shillings, one coin, a Scotch shilling. The English shilling is not out yet I believe. I just think it well for The busy men you are to have a moment of relaxation. Hence my sending this to you. With a story of Napoleon, as told to me by my French companion during the Arctic Winter, where we caught the sea salmon, on Coronation Gulf, named so by Sir John Franklin in 1821 Coronation Year of H.M. King George IV. Two of our great north men, Henry Hudson and Sir John Franklin. Reading of The President's great liking for fishing, if I were to loan you a water color of the most northerly fish in America, to show him, I hope you would not think me forward. It is so rare that I am sure you will be glad to see it, and I will get a great pleasure in loaning it to you. Please thank The President for his New Year Greetings and may I say to you Mr. Secretary of State many Happy New Years to The President, The Vice President, The Secretary of State and The Cabinet. Sincerely and most Respectfully Yours ALFRED L. REEVE Prospector. 45-32:20-25 A STORY OF NAPOLEON One day during his heyday, Napoleon was riding with a few courtiers through the south of France. Coming to a small town, and seeing the large church and across from it the priest's residence, with rather an unusual sign, Napoleon dismounted from his horse and went in. "Are you the parish priest?" "Yes sir." "I am going to ask you three questions, and I will require an answer when I return in about three days time. My first question--be sure you have an answer, if not you may pay dearly for it--perhaps your life--My first question is: How high are the heavens? My next: How deep is the sea? My third: You will be able to tell me what I am thinking about. II With this he turned about and out and away. The priest, rather frightened, went out to see his friend, the miller. He told him the story. The miller laughed, "Don't worry. = The priest suggested that the miller come over and take his gown and meet Napoleon, and meantime he would go into the country. "All right," said the miller, and the change was made. In due time Napoleon returned and entered, saying "Have you an answer to my questions?" "Well! Try me !" "How high are the heavens?" "One look" said the priest. "Very good" said Napoleon. "How deep is the sea?" "As far as a stone will sink." "Very good" said Napoleon. "Now tell me what I am thinking. = "You think" said the priest "That you are talking to the parish priest. You are not--you are talking to the miller." 45-32-20-25 ADDRESS OFFICIAL COMMUNICATIONS TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE WASHINGTON, D.C.
