Over the years Doug has been a valuable member of the President's team and has served him faithfully. For several months, however, Doug has been discussing with a variety of people, and specifically with me, his decision to leave his White House position to pursue other avenues. During that period of time, several options were presented to Doug and discussed. A short time ago, a mutual decision was made that Doug would end his tenure here as of September 1. Both Doug and others here recognize that there have been rumors and innuendos regarding his decision to leave. None of these has any basis in truth. The President has named Ms. Lee Ann Metzger as Special Assistant to the President for Public Liaison. Lee Ann shares your values and concerns. You will find that she brings a wealth of experience to the job and will be a valuable addition to our team. Thank you again for taking the time to write and share your thoughts with us. Dear Mr. President: I wish to express my dismay at what would seem to be your change of heart on several issues. Specifically, I disagree with the firing of Mr. Doug Wead, the inclusion of homosexuals and AIDS victims as protected groups in the Civil Rights Protection Act, and the softening of your no new tax position. Mr. President, it must be lonely up there for you and Mr. Quayle, being a conservative oasis in the midst of the otherwise liberal desert of Washington. But we of the conservative Christian majority elected you because you promised to protect traditional family values and control federal spending. I'm sorry we have neglected to give you more constant encouragement, leaving your ear to be dominated by liberal lobbyists and your liberal colleagues. Conservative Americans who embrace traditional family values are still in the majority, as shown by certain poles and by your overwhelming victory over Mr. Dukakis. Sunday I was privileged to teach I Samuel 7:3-14 to an adult Sunday school class. When Israel (like America) worshipped Baalim (fertility, abundance of crops, prosperity, national debt) and Ashtaroth (sex, perversion, promiscuity, abortion), God allowed them to be defeated by the Philistines (like Russians). But when Israel "put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the Lord only", then "the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel". When America began to worship prosperity and sex in the 1960's, God permitted our defeat in Viet Namn, our first defeat in American history. America stands today at the same cross roads where Israel stood those centuries ago. We may choose to continue worshiping prosperity and perversion with increased subservience to the East, or we may choose returning to the traditional values of economic and sexual self control that brought God's blessings to our forefathers. President Reagan was the greatest president of my 44-year lifetime. Mr. President, you have the opportunity to become the greatest president since George Washington. Please stand firm on your promises of preserving traditional family values and controlling spending. Please lead America, as Samuel led Israel, back to favor with God. We of the conservative Christian majority will boldly follow. Respectfully, langin Stemis Vaughn Stenis P.S: I was raised in Lubbock, Texas, your favorite barometer. 27 FOREST C. BEAVERS, JR. D.WEAR 9085 Billiuridge Drive Shreveport, LA 71118 August 6, 1990 The Honorable George Bush President of the United States of America 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C. Mr. President: Words seem too little to express just how appalled I am at the recent events surrounding the dismissal of Doug Weed from your staff. And I sincerely hope that it wasn't you who did that. May I direct your attention to the much heralded First Amendment to the Constitution you swore to uphold and defend. On your staff, is there exception to being afforded protection under the law of the land? Weed's letter simply stated that you were done a disservice by your staff when gay and lesbian leaders were invited to the signing of the Hates Crimes Bill. Certainly, Weed was very soft-spoken on this. But, he was absolutely correct. Where, then, Mr. President, were Mr. Weeds rights. Temporarily misplaced, perhaps? Mr. President, you have the distinction of being the first President of the United States who has allowed, much less invited, avowed homosexual leaders into the White House. Go ahead! Follow the example of Mr. Carter, who among his many other non-accomplishments, was the first to have his staff using illegal drugs there. Now, it appears, you have your first. Know this. I object most strongly, speaking as one of the owners. And I remind you, sir, and whoever of your staff led you to this, that you are only a tenant there, a tenant whose lease may just have been abbreviated. You and/or your staff have desecrated a national treasure by this action. In your last campaign you were strong on families and traditional values. Partying with homosexual leaders is in direct contravention to that expression of support. Your expressed support of such traditional values won you quite a lot of votes. Your inviting these groups into the White House can lose as many or more. Frest Barno Sincerely, J Forest C. Beavers, Jr. CC: Senator J. Bennett Johnston Senator John Breaux N. How contrary to all that we believe in and value, to have him dismissed in favor of a people that are per- verted in their lifestyle. The late Dr. J. Vernon McGee states it so well in his Bible notes (p. 238, Vol II, Thru' the Bible with J. Vernon McGee) when he says: "It is obvious that the decisions made in our government today - regardless of the party - are not made 'in the fear of God. ' They are made in the fear of the voters. There is little effort being made to please God in our government. I wish it could be said that the United States of America is a Christian nation. It is not." I hear a lot about discrimination against blacks and other minority groups, but I never hear anything about the blatant discrimination against christians in virtually every aspect of our society. Dear Mr. President: We have been very pleased with the selection of Mr. Doug Weed and his impact in allowing the Christian community to have 8 voice in the White House. Yesterday we were made aware of his firing, supposedly as 8 result of his opposition to the homosexual forum which has recently been given 8 priority position in your administration. The Christian community was instrumental in making its voice known by overwhelmingly selecting you as President. You recently abandoned us with your statement that raising taxes is a very real possibility. If Mr. Weed's position is less important than the homosexual community, which has no record of supporting you or your administration, then it will be difficult for us to continue to support you, except through much prayer. Is this the reward the homosexual community is due for their treatment of Mr. Sullivan recently, while making a speech in San Francisco to the AIDS conference? Please reconsider your stand on this issue and return Mr. Doug Weed to his place in your administration, even at the cost of the homosexual community. May God bless you! Chupte Sincerely Randolph G. Very truly yours Haniet Aimmons LA WEAD August 6, 1990 President George Bush The White House Washington D. C., 20500 Dear President Bush, Recently I became aware of the dismissal of Mr. Doug Weed, spe- cial assistant to the President, from the White House Staff. I would like to express my concern that this man was a very effec- tive spokesman for many in the Evangelical Christian segment of the citizenry of the U. S, and his dismissal appears to have been in response to a small but vocal segment of society. I would ask that you look into this matter and reconsider Mr. Weeds dismissal as well as determine the person or persons re- sponsible for this most questionable act. I believe that the Evangelical Christians have supported you in the last election and I trust that we would still have a reason to do so. It appears that there is a steady erosion of ethical and moral values in our nation and we must be diligent to guard every aspect of our society against this do your own thing, or if it feels good do it perspective of life. What about Mr. Weeds, replacement? If he is effective in his job he will also come under attack, if he isn't he shouldn't be in the position either. I believe there is a concerted effort by certain groups to elimi- nate all Christian influence from society. The laws or interpre- tations of them, the school curriculums and textbooks, the bias reflected in the media as well as many bureaucrats bear this out. I expect that within a few years to see a severe persecution of Christians in this the very nation established by those with Christian values and convictions. I trust you and those in your administration will not be a part of this. I understand that there is an effort to court those from the homosexual community into the republican party and it appears the mainstream of american life. This is an abomination to the God I serve and must not be. I have been a republican all of my voting life, but if this trend continues I won't be for long. Sincerely, E. W. Pruitt, Jr. 6761 E. 28th. Douglas Wead, special assistant to the president for public liaison. If you are to be a president of traditional values, you certainly are headed in the wrong direction. It is obvious that you are leaning toward these special interest groups that have reeked havoc on our moral and medical communities in this country. I am just one of over 25,000 people in the Jacksonville, Florida community who has agreed to make public my statement to the president and to my senator and congressman. The active courting of homosexual lobby by the Bush administration goes far beyond any argument of your being "president of all the people." Dear Mr. President: As a charter member of the Republican Presidential Task Force as well as many other Republican organizations, I wish to let you know how betrayed I feel. I feel betrayed because you fired Mr. Doug Wead, Assistant to the President for Public Liaison. As an evangelical Christian, I supported and worked in your campaign for President. I did this because you supported traditional moral values during your campaign. Why did you change? How could you honor homosexual gay activists by inviting them to the White House to witness the signing of both the Hate Crimes Bill and the Americans for Disabilities Act? Don't you realize the millions of hard-earned dollars being spent on AIDS research and the heartbreak of many Americans because of the selfish homosexuals who refuse to change their lifestyle? Why should you be the first President to honor such self-centered persons? Millions of hard-working, moral, honest citizens have never received such honors. I am amazed that you cannot see the dichotomy of your actions. Mr. Wead informed you of the way evangelical Christians would feel about your honoring homosexuals. Mr. Wead was exactly right. Nevertheless, he was fired for doing the job forwhich he was hired. Do you actually think that the homosexuals will vote for you in 1992? Not a chance--as long as you support traditional family values. But--maybe that is changing too. I cannot express in words my feelings of disappointment in your firing of Mr. Wead. Whomever advised you in this matter was certainly wrong. We realize how many and great the decisions you must make every day. You are often in our prayers. It has been brought to our attention, however, that your Chief of Staff and those who work closely with him, have decided to ease your friends, and ours, Doug Wead from his position. This, Mr. President will be a grave mistake. Already the news of Dougs dismissal is causing a furor in the Evangelical circles which is several million strong. So strong, in fact, that it could seriously effect your re-election, and that would be sad. I am sure that many that work on your staff are not fully aware of the stength of the Evangelicals, and are therefore inclined to make decisions that could be harmful to you. Mr. President, I feel that the best thing you can do at this time is to inform your Chief of Staff to retain Doug Wead in his position. We pray that this will be done. Very Sincerely Rev. Surely God will guide you in choosing the right course of action. The immediate purpose of this letter, how- ever, is to question your dismissal of Doug Wead, a born again Christian who I thought was serving you well in your liaison office. He certainly was well thought of by evan- gelicals who make up a large portion of your support. His absence from the White House is a blow to those of us concerned about family values. If it is true that the liberals on your staff got him out because of his letter criticizing the invitation to homosexuals to a bill-signing ceremony, the more the pity! Paul St. Orlando, Fl. 32808 37 AUGUST 5, 1990 Nead President George Bush The White House Washington DC 20500 Dear Mr. President: I am a Pentecostal Christian, called to preach and teach and minist- er the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1988 the whole year, up until Election Day-- I prayed day and night for the elections. First I prayed to find out from the Lord who the right men were for the offices of President and Vice Presi- dent. When He told me that you, Mr. Bush, were His choice for our new Chief Executive, I began at once praying for you to be nominated. eve And you were nominated! Then I began praying for you to be elected. All year long I prayed and watched your campaign and prayed some more. On Election Day I fasted and prayed, holding you up before our Lord and Savior. And you were elected! Praise the Lord! Since the day you took office in January of 1989 I have continued to praye for you daily--that the Lord would bless and protect you from all harm, and that He help you to make right and good decisions con- cerning the people of this nation. And you have done a good job so far, in my opinion, except for one thing. Your recent decision to put Special Assistant Doug Wead out of his position as Public Liaison, in my personal opinion, was not a good one. We Christians of America need a fellow Christian representative in the White House to set a Christian example before the nation and to act as our spokesman; to do whatever is necessary to maintain good sound Biblical principles and values in our country. As I write this letter on this, the Lord's Day--the 5th day of August-- I prayerfully request that you seriously reconsider letting Mr. Wead remain in his position there in Washington DC. Please keep him, and other good men of God, in White House positions. We Christians are "the salt of the earth" ! Without us, and without our Blessed Lord and Savior who lives in our hearts, the earth would immediately cease to have any purpose for existing! (Scripture quote: Matthew 5:13). Too, I, and many of my brothers and sisters in Christ, are greatly disturbed over the recent invitation to have homosexually perverted perople present at our nation's capitol for the signing of certain bills. WE ARE GREATLY DISTRUBED BY THIS! We see such an invitation as being White House ACCEPTANCE of their sordid, ungodly lifestyle! Public acceptance of it! Although we do not reject the person of any human being, we do reject and loathe the homosexuals' abominable life- style, which has served to corrupt the high moral standards of our country!
