DISABLED TEXANS TAKE HISTORY TO SWEDISH QUEEN
HOUSTON, TEXAS-Three disabled Texans representing the Coalition of Texans
with Disabilities will present Her Majesty, Queen Silvia of Sweden, with an
historical Swedish document dating from the year 1652. The presentation will
occur in Stockhom at the Royal Palace on September 25, 1984.
Bearing the seal and signature of Queen Christina, one of the most renowned
Swedish monarchs, the three century old document was donated for this occasion
by a Texan who is himself disabled. The anonymous donor intends for the gift to
symbolize the common struggle for independence by disabled people around the
world.
Like the United States, the Swedish people and their government have made
great progress to insure equality and provide independent living opportunities
for disabled people. Following the presentation, Queen Silvia and
representatives of organizations of disabled people in Sweden will meet with the
disabled Texans to discuss issues of common concern and plans for future
cooperative efforts to resolve problems facing disabled people internationally.

Stockholm, Sweden
Dear Mr. Hunold,
It has been quite sometime since we exchanged correspondence, and I
wanted to thank you for your very kind offer of hosting our delegation on a
visit to Queen Sylvia in Stockholm. As you might have imagined, the trip
which we had planned for September 1983 was postponed due to conflicts in
the Queen's schedule. At the present time, I am in the process of correspond-
ing with the Queen's secretary to get another date. As soon as I know when
we will be traveling to Stockholm, I will get in touch with you to find out
if we can accept your gracious offer of hospitality at the Sheraton-Stockholm
Hotel.
Thank you for your interest in and support of our project. I look
forward to meeting with you in the near future.
Sincerely yours,

Thank you for your letter of July 12 addressed to

Can you please let us know the exact dates as we are
already fully booked some dates in September,

Dear Mr. Hunold,
We are very excited about our future trip to Stockholm to meet with
Queen Silvia. We are also very grateful that you offered to provide us
with lodging for the nights of September 24 and September 25.
As I mentioned to you on the telephone, it is not likely that we will
need five rooms during our stay in Stockholm. In fact, we may only need
two rooms, and certainly not more than four. This all depends on the exact
number of people who can arrange to be part of our small contingency. I
understand from our telephone conversation that it may be possible for you
to extend the accommodations for us a few extra days in order to enable us
to have follow-up meetings with representatives of handicapped organizations
in Sweden. In the case of such an extension, we would only need two rooms
during the extended period. In any case, we must leave Stockholm by
September 30, 1984. With regard to this extension period, we shall remain
flexible and hopeful.
Our trip to Stockholm will no doubt receive publicity from the media
here in Texas. I would like to give you and your organization appropriate
credit for helping to sponsor our trip. Please advise me on the way in which
you would want your participation to be mentioned in such publicity. Also,
if the Sheraton Corporation or if the Sheraton-Stockholm Hotel would like to
use the sponsorship of our trip in any of your publicity, please do not hesi-
tate to contact me. I believe that the fact that your hotel has special
accommodations for handicapped guests is worthy of recognition.
We certainly do appreciate your kindness in assisting us with accommoda-
tions during our visit to Stockholm. We are anxious to meet with you and to
thank you in person.
Sincerely yours,
Lex Frieden

Mr. Phil Shea
Senior Vice President
Public Relations
Sheraton Corporation
60 State Street
Boston, Massachusetts 02109
Dear Mr. Shea,
My purpose in writing you is to seek the cooperation of the Sheraton
Corporation in a project which I believe may have important significance
to you from the standpoint of public relations, as well as philanthropic
corporate responsibility. Specifically, I would like Sheraton to donate
lodging and dining accommodations for three to five disabled individuals
who have been invited to present a 17th century Swedish state document
to Queen Sylvia in ceremonies to be held in Stockholm in late September.
As you know, Sheraton is the only major American hotel chain with property
in Stockholm. Furthermore, my research indicates that the Sheraton Hotel
there is one of the few hotels in Stockholm which has facilities to
accommodate people with disabilities. Sheraton should be complimented in
this regard, and I believe the recognition which could be gained through
partial sponsorship of this project would draw international attention to
the facts that Sheraton has a first class American hotel in Stockholm, and
that Sheraton has made efforts worldwide to accommodate the needs of all
the traveling public, including those people who are disabled. The follow-
ing information will provide you with some background and specific details
regarding our need for this contribution.
In 1980, three disabled individuals from Texas spent four weeks in
Sweden studying programs which serve disabled individuals and meeting with
leaders of organizations of disabled people. This study trip was sponsored
by the World Rehabilitation Fund, Inc. (a report of this study is attached).
Since this initial visit, several visits by disabled people from Sweden to
the U. S. have occurred. In each case the bonds of friendship and coopera-
tion have grown and expanded to include more Americans. Several working
relationships and business ventures have also been established through this
exchange process.
-continued-
Page 2, Mr. Phil Shea, July 12, 1983
Recognizing the importance and the potential long-term benefits of
this fruitful international linkage, one disabled Texan (who prefers to
remain anonymous) felt compelled to offer, from his own inheritance, as a
gift to the people of Sweden, an original Swedish state document dating
from the 17th century and signed by Swedish Queen Christina. The donor's
idea is to present this gift in behalf of the Coalition of Texans with
Disabilities as a symbol of goodwill and unity among organizations of
disabled people in the U. S. and in Sweden. It is the donor's hope that
this gesture of friendship will reinforce the bridge of constructive
cooperation which has already been established, and that it will set the
stage for expanding friendship and cooperation among groups of disabled
people throughout the world.
Having been apprised by disabled people in Sweden of the symbolic
significance of this offer, Queen Sylvia of Sweden has expressed her
desire to invite a delegation of disabled people representing the Coali-
tion of Texans with Disabilities to present the Christina Document to her
personally in both public and private ceremonies. These ceremonies would
include representatives of disabled people in Sweden. It is contemplated
that the American delegation would also study the progressive Swedish
approaches to disability and engage in valuable exchanges of views with
disabled people and other Swedish authorities.
In order to arrange this event in a timely and diplomatic fashion,
we are trying to obtain commitments for sponsorship or contributions by
the earliest possible date. For charitable purposes, the contribution
can be made to The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) -- a
nonprofit, tax-exempt organization.
I really appreciate your consideration of this proposal. Please
contact me if I can provide you with further details regarding our efforts
in this regard. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely yours,
Lex Frieden

PRESS RELEASE
The Sheraton-Stockholm Hotel was built in 1971, but
is becoming younger by the day due to all renovations
done.
The 8-storey red brick building was erected at what
used to be the old traffic circulation centre. Today
it is the centre of commercial activities, shopping
areas, theatres, movies, trade, business and most
important, it is next door to the airport terminal,
the train station and the subway. Even one of the
big evening papers has its office around the corner,
to be in the midst of where it all happens.
The 467 rooms, including 18 suites, have all been newly
renovated and so have the corridors. The rooms, we dare
say, are the most spacious in town, if not in Sweden.
They are tastefully decorated by the internationally
known Swedish designer, Mr Hans Trädgardh. The suites
are different in design, standard and price.
The Presidential Suite is not only for presidents and
royalty, though many have stayed there.
The Executive Suites are very fashionable with indi-
vidual design on each floor.
The popular Junior Suites are for those who do not
mind showing guests into the bedroom.
The Business Suites are for those who need a small meeting-
room adjacent to their bedroom. They are newly renovated.
The 8th floor is, since a few years back, The Sheraton
Tower, our executive floor, tailor-made for the stressed
and travelled businessman or woman. For the business-
woman we have specially decorated rooms, the "Lady
Sheraton" rooms.
