You are truly a pioneer in this field, and you have my best wishes for your continued advances as you fight this dreaded disease. Alzheimer's Disease affects millions of Americans, either directly as victims or through the tremendcus burden it places on the victims' families. Alzheimer's Disease deadens the spirit and destroys the mind of SO many Americans, and we can only hope that through your work even fewer will fall prey to it in the years to come. Your commitment and courage surely light the way for others who seek a cure, and brighten the lives of those left in the darkness of this disease. Thank you for your energy, determination and stamina. Good luck in your research, and congratulations once again. God bless you. Sincerely, Carl W. Cotman, Ph.D. George G. So I am, at this late date, appealing to your patience. The Metropolitan Life Foundation Alzheimers Awards for medical research are being presented on January 31, 1989 in New York and it is the Foundation's and my hope that letter from President Bush can be read at this dinner. I have attached the previous communication to Joe Casper. As you see, this request has been in the works for weeks. However, I have just learned, from Jim, that it has probably been misdirected. He suggested I appeal to you directly and in doing so mention that former President Reagan sent us a letter last year. A letter from President Bush would mean so much to Dr. Cotman and Dr. Glenner and be such a fitting tribute to their wonderful work. If you could see your way clear to help with approval and swift expedition of this letter, everyone involved would be so grateful. Congratulations on your new assignment and best of everything to this new administration. I'm rooting for your boss. Sincerely Senior Susan fifter F. This year these awards are being given to two California doctors for their advances in this field. As I mentioned in our phone conversation, Met Life would be honored to be able to read a letter of congratulations from President-elect Bush at the awards dinner. I am enclosing a confidential memo on the two recipients: Dr. Carl W. Cotman and Dr. George G. Glenner. These two men are truly pioneers in research medicine who have had the courage and the commitment to explore medical techniques that have brought us closer to finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Honoring them with a letter from President-elect Bush will only increase the already important nature of their work and, hopefully, spur others to follow in their footsteps. We all appreciate any help you give in making this year's awards ceremony truly memorable. Thanks again. I'll call you later this week. Sincerely, Pee Susan F. Kennedy Enc.
