STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
The President met this afternoon in separate meetings with French
Defense Minister Joxe and British Defense Minister King. The two
defense ministers are visiting the United States for
consultations on the Persian Gulf situation and the coalition
efforts. Both ministers met with Secretary Cheney prior to their
visit to the White House.
The President thanked the ministers for their countries' efforts
on behalf of the coalition, in particular, for the troops that
they have stationed in the Gulf. The President reviewed
Secretary Cheney and General Powell's visit to Saudi Arabia.
He
stated that the coalition effort is proceeding on schedule. The
President noted that a decision for commencing the ground war
would not be influenced by artificial timetables. The President
also stated that his consultations on the Gulf situation will
continue with coalition members.
